Abstract

We are making an efficient solar panel monitoring system which measures

following parameters.

Light Intensity
Temperature of surrounding
Current from solar cell
Voltage of solar cell

Parameters are displayed on LCD and Mobile. Our monitoring system would turn
on or off when the systems voltage goes beyond a certain limit.

Working Principle of Solar Cell

Solar panel are semi conducting materials

Solar cell convert light energy in electrical energy.
Photon in Sunlight hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semi-conducting materials.
Possibilities how photon hit solar cell.
The photon can pass straight through the silicon this (generally) happens for lower
energy photons.
The photon can reflect off the surface.
The photon can be absorbed by the silicon if the photon energy is higher than the
silicon band gap value.

Working Principle of Solar Cell

Electrons (negatively charged) are knocked loose from their atoms

as they are excited. Due to their special structure and the
materials in solar cells, the electrons are only allowed to move in
a single direction. The electronic structure of the materials is very
important for the process to work, and often silicon incorporating
small amounts of boron or phosphorus is used in different layers.
An array of solar cells converts solar energy into a usable amount
of direct current (DC) electricity.

LDR (Light Dependent Resistor)

LDR is basically a photocell that works on the
principle of photoconductivity.
Photoconductivity is an optical and electrical
phenomenon in which a material becomes more
electrically conductive due to the absorption of
electromagnetic radiation
The passive component is basically a resistor whose
resistance value decreases when the intensity of
light decreases.

Temperature sensor (LM35)

LM35 is Analog Output Temperature Sensor
This type of sensor consists of a material that
performs the operation according to temperature
to vary the resistance. This change of resistance
is sensed by circuit and it calculates temperature.
Temperature Range -55 to +150C
Linear Temp. slope 10mV / C

10

Current Sensor(ACS712)
The ACS712 current sensor is based on the
principle of Hall-effect, which was
discovered by Dr. Edwin Hall in 1879.
According to this principle, when a current
carrying conductor is placed into a
magnetic filed, a voltage is generated
across its edges perpendicular to the
directions of both the current and the
magnetic field.

Voltage Sensor
Arduino has built in analog voltage meter which
can be used to measure voltage of 0-5V range.
In order to measure high voltages we used
voltage module.
It is fundamentally a 5:1 voltage divider using a
30K and a 7.5K Ohm resistor.

Arduino
A microcontroller board, contain on-board power supply, USB port
to communicate with pc, and an Atmel microcontroller chip

Application
Smart Solar Panel Monitoring System can be used with any solar
panel.
It updates user continuously about output of solar panel.
It is totally user independent after installation. It automatically
turns OFF the output if output of solar cell is low so it can save
appliances from burning which are connected to solar panel. And it
automatically turns ON as output become better.
