Symbolism
Symbolism is the practice or art of using an
object or a word to represent an abstract idea.
An action, person, place, word, or object can all
have a symbolic meaning.

Origin of Symbolism

The Symbolist Manifesto

An article entitled "Le Symbolisme", which appeared in Le
Figaro French newspaper, 18 Sept 1886, was written by Jean
Moreas.
Moras announced that symbolism was hostile to "plain
meanings, declamations, false sentimentality and matter-offact description", and that its goal instead was to "clothe the
Ideal in a perceptible form" whose "goal was not in itself, but
whose sole purpose was to express the Ideal"

Symbolism in Visual Art

Symbolism in literature is distinct from symbolism in
art although the two were similar in many aspects. In
painting, symbolism can be seen as a revival of some
mystical tendencies in the Romantic tradition, and
was close to the self-consciously morbid and private
decadent movement.
