Introduction

Educational Technology (ET) is the efficient organisation of

any learning system adapting or adopting methods, processes,
and products to serve identified educational goals. Over the
past decades, educational technology in India has taken two
routes:
The first route involved a large number of experiments
aimed at the qualitative improvement of schools, adopted the
systems approach to analyse the problems plaguing the
particular situation, and have evolved a range of solutions.
These have included the development of flexible systems,
alternative curricula, multilevel organisation of classes; lowcost teaching-learning materials, innovative activities,
continuous support systems for teacher training, etc.

The second route is government sponsored schemes

such as the Educational Technology (ET) Scheme and
the Computer Literacy and Studies in Schools
(CLASS) and their present-day analogues, including
partnerships with global players. This included the
supply of radio-cum-cassette players, colour
televisions, microcomputers, present-day computer
labs, and even satellite-receiving terminals. These
schemes have largely remained supply-driven,
equipment-centred, and disseminative in design.

1.IT @SCHOOL

IT@School provides ICT enabled education to 1.6 million

students per year in the state . It endeavours to enhance the
intellectual productivity of teacher and the curricular
comprehension of students.
IT@School is the nodal agency for implementing EDUSAT
network and runs an exclusive channel for education called
'ViCTERS' (Virtual Classroom Technology on Edusat for Rural
Schools). The project has now associated with BSNL to provide
Internet broad band connectivity to all high schools in Kerala.

The IT @ School Project was started in Kerala as a computeraided instruction project in 2003 for the benefit of Class VIII
students.
IT@School Project of Government of Kerala, is mainly intended
to meet the demand for an Interactive Satellite based Distance
Education system for the country.
Kerala has developed the syllabus for computer education
This project is being implemented in about 2,735 schools.
About 25,700 computer systems have been provided. Three
students share one system.
allotted four hours per week, two hours are spent on theory
classes and two hours on practical assignments. Students take
online examinations.

Benefits of using IT@School

The increase in worldwide computer usage and the need for
computer skills in today's workforce have pushed the US
government to create guidelines, such as:
the Core Curriculum Content Standards, to ensure that
students are prepared to meet the demands of the twenty first
century
Maintaining a citizenry
students are able to have new authentic and meaningful learning
experiences.

3. AKSHAY
Akshaya was conceived as a landmark ICT
project by the Kerala State Information Technology
Mission(KSITM) to bridge the digital divide and to
bring the benefits of ICT to the entire population of the
State. In the initial phase the focus was placed on
educating one person in each family to be e-literate.
Malappuram, a backward district of Kerala was
selected for piloting e-literacy and project was
launched on 18th November 2002 by the Honorable
President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Establishment of Akshaya-e-Kendra as an ICT access

point, one for every 1000 families living in two/three municipal
or Panchayat wards was the most important strategic decision.
Other details chalked out for implementation were:
1.Akshaya e-centres were envisaged to have five computers and
other infrastructure at a cost of Rs. 3-4 lakhs per centre and
they were to be within 2-3 Kilometre distance from every
household.
2.Entrepreneurs from the locality with service orientation were to
be selected, on the social entrepreneurship model for running
the centres.

3.At least one person from every family was to be given training
for ten days.
The program was arranged through Grama Panchayat Rs.
Block Panchayat, Dist. Panchayat .Strategies were evolved for
the involvement of community, civil society organisations,
youth and welfare organisations, local bodies, etc for
implementation.
4.Positioning Social Animators for linking Akshaya centres,
citizens, local bodies and government.
5. Strategies for establishing connectivity, creation of locally
relevant content etc.

Advantages of
Akshaya
a). Inclusive Development
b).Women Participation and Empowerment
c).Villages Being Transformed

a). Inclusive Development of Akshaya

By reaching the remote rural locations of the
State on a sustainable basis, the Akshaya e-centres
would encourage social inclusion of hitherto hereby
marginalized communities and under-privileged
sections of the rural society.

b).Women Participation and Empowerment

The number of women who have come forward
with the choice of an entrepreneurial career by
starting an Akshaya e-centre is significant
c).Villages Being Transformed
Akshaya - for the benefit of people in the
State, especially rural population. Access to
information and services like e-governance, microcredit, literacy, education, health, etc., can provide a
solid foundation for the economic prosperity of rural
villages.

Conclusion
There is an urgent need to convince the educational
system, which should play an important role in engineering
the teaching-learning situation and to make it a more
meaningful experience for both teachers and their pupils.
Moving ahead with time, IT@School has enhanced the
educational scenario in the state to a new level by making use
of EDUSAT facilities. Besides the regular role it plays for
dissemination of knowledge and Information Technology,
VICTERS strives to provide all physical conveniences to
students and teachers to come up with their own productions.
Introduction of Akshaya villages being transformed.
