What is an Initiative?
Represents a goal the department or
division desires to accomplish.
Helps accomplish the strategic goals
and objectives of the Colleges
Strategic Plan.
Reflects growth or change, not a
continuation of departments function.
Focuses the department on where it is
headed.

What is NOT an
initiative?

A resource need is not an initiative

(e.g., hire a research assistant, increase

a supply budget)

A continuation of what the

department does is not an initiative

(e.g., continue to maintain buildings

and grounds)

certifications to stay current with
industry standards. (Technology)

Goal 4 Develop and manage the Colleges
resources to enhance the fiscal health and
operations of the College.
Objective F Promote sustainability and
environmentally sound policy in campus
resource planning.

Initiative - Explore and pursue grant

funding opportunities to move toward
a green campus environment.

Examples of Initiatives
Provide mentoring within departments for
new full-time and adjunct faculty. (Social
Science)
Formalize a process for students and
employees to participate in community
service. (Presidents Office)
Develop and implement new employee
training for the use of campus technology
(i.e. HANK, WebFocus, etc). (Research and
Planning, Human Resources, Data and Voice)

How many initiatives?

NOT TOO MANY!
Try to limit the number of initiatives
to reflect your departments highest
priorities for the coming year(s), and
to what can actually be
accomplished.
Be Brief!!
Ideally, limit the number of initiatives
to between 5 10 for three years.

3-year plan
2015-2016
2016-2017
2017-2018
Plans will typically be most
detailed for first year in the cycle
and least detailed for last year.
3-year cycle allows departments to
phase in new initiatives and the
resources needed to support them.

For Example
Year 1
Explore the feasibility of an Associate
of Science in Forensic Science.
Year 2
Plan the curricula for the Associate of
Science degree in Forensic Science.
Year 3
Implement the Associate of Science
degree in Forensic Science.

Linking Planning &

Budgeting

Planning is not budgeting it is driven

by initiatives, not by resource needs.
Planning drives budget decisions.
Initiatives show what departments
want to accomplish.
Related Needs show what it will take
to accomplish initiatives.
Examples of Related Needs staffing,
operational needs, capital, facilities.

Answers the question, what is the
evidence that this initiative was
accomplished and successful.
Will be useful in reporting back on
planning accomplishments.

Indicator of Success New
departmental procedures published
and implemented resulting in a (40%)
decrease of students complaints.

applications will be completed each
year for sustainability funding.

Six Steps in Planning

1. As a Division or Department, review
the Strategic plan to understand
where the College would like to be in
three years.
2. Solicit input and involvement in
identifying departmental/divisional
initiatives (prioritized).
3. Link initiatives to Strategic Goals and
Objectives.

4. Identify Related Needs (staffing,
operations, capital, facility) and
Indicators of Success.
5. Send draft of 3-year plan to your VicePresident by December 13, 2013.
6. Schedule an appointment and meet
with your Vice-President meetings
are December 13, 2013 thru
December 20, 2013..
