W hat is AERO SPACE EN G IN EERIN G ?

A branch of engineering that involves

the design, manufacture, and

science of aircraft and spacecraft.
It encompasses the testing of
aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, and
rockets.
Aerospace Engineers specialize in
areas that include structural design,
navigation and control guidance, and
instrumentation.

Aeronautical Engineering
Astronautical Engineering

AeronauticalEngineering
Involves craft that stay inside the

Earths atmosphere such as missiles,

airplanes, gliders, and some rockets.

AstronauticalEngineering
Involves craft that operate in outer

space such as satellites, spaceships,

and some rockets.

H istory
The very first flight was performed

by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783

in a hot air balloon.
The first planning for flying
machines began in the 19th and 20th
centuries.
Sir George Cayley is known as the
first real pioneer of aeronautics
engineering.

December 17, 1903- first flight of the

Wright brothers.

Aeronautical technology advanced

rapidly during World Wars.

The first definition of aerospace
engineering appeared in February 1958.
The definition considered the Earth's
atmosphere and the outer space as a
single realm.
Aeronautics and Space Administration
was founded in 1958 as a response to
the Cold War.
on October 4, 1957, U.S. aerospace
engineers launched the first American
satellite on January 31, 1958, the
sputnik.

Early launch systems were far from

reliable, but by 1960, the nation was

hurriedly working to send an astronaut
into spacealong with a host of national
security payloadsto overcome the
Soviet Unions early lead in space
technology.
The launch industry has come a long
way from the risk-filled early forays into
space to the well-orchestrated launches
of todayand Aerospace has been
there, every step of the way.

Interrelation ofAerospace
Engineering and M aterialScience
Flight vehicles are subjected to demand

conditions such as those produced by

changes in atmospheric pressure and
temperature with structural loads
applied upon vehicle components.
Consequently, they are usually the
products of various technological and
engineering disciplines including
materials science.

Materials Science involves the study

of the relationships between the

synthesis, processing, structure,
properties, and performance of
materials that enable an engineering
function.
Aerospace engineering studies the
materials of which the aerospace
structures are to be built. New
materials with very specific
properties or existing ones are
modified to improve their
performance
