COMBUSTION
CHAMBER

INTRODUCTION
A combustion chamber is the part of an internal combustion
engine in which the air/fuel mixture is burned.
Proper burning and proper stabilization and propagation of
flame in the combustion chamber are essential for optimum
engine power.
The amount of fuel added to the air will depend upon the
temperature rise required. The maximum temperature is
limited to 850 to 1700 degrees C by the materials from which
the turbine blades and nozzle are made.

COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The combustion process increases the internal energy of a gas,
which translates into an increase in temperature, pressure or
volume depending on the configuration.
In an enclosure e.g the cylinder of a reciprocating engine, the
volume is controlled and the combustion creates an increase in
pressure.
In a continuous flow system e.g a jet engine combustor, the
pressure is controlled and the combustion creates an increase
in volume.

COMBUSTION CHAMBER
The increase in the pressure or volume can be used to do
work e.g.
To move a piston on a crankshaft
To move a turbine disc in a gas turbine.
If the gas velocity changes, thrust is produced, such as in
the nozzle of a rocket engine.

CONCLUSION
Combustion chamber is very essential in mechanical
engines because it is where combustion or burning of airfuel mixture takes place and without combustion, there
cant be exhaust (action) which will lead to thrust
(reaction) as propounded in newtons third law.
