The Definition
Elliptical structure is deletion
of word or some words from a
sentence which is purposed and
make it shorter and the
structure is better.

Pattern 1
Two positive sentences with the same VOC.
Main Positive Sentence + and + Subject + Verb+ too
or
Main Positive Sentence + and + so + Verb + Subject

E.g:
He is busy. I am busy.

He is busy, and I am too.

He is busy, and so am I.

John bought a new book.

Maria bought a new book.

John bought a new book, and

Maria bought too.
John bought a new book, and
so did Maria.

Billy has written a story. I

have written a story.

Billy has written a story and I

have too.
Billy has written a story and
so have I.

He will come here soon. She

will come here soon.

He will come here soon and

she will too.
He will come here soon and
so will she.

My mother can cook fried

rice. I can cook fried rice.

My mother can cook fried rice

and I can too.
My mother can cook fried rice
and so can I.

Pattern 2
Two negative sentences with the same VOC.
Main Negative Sentence + and + Subject + Negative Aux + either
or
Main Negative Sentence + and + neither + Positive Aux + Subject

E.g:
I dont like apple. She doent
like apple.

I dont like apple and she

doesnt either.
I dont like apple and neither
does she.

You werent stupid. Collin

wasnt stupid.

You werent stupid and Collin

wasnt either.
You werent stupid and
neither Collin was Collin.

Jimmy didnt go to college.

You didnt go to college.

Jimmy didnt go to college

and you didnt either.
Jimmy didnt go to college
and neither did you.

You shouldnt follow the

camp. Julliet shouldnt follow
the camp.

You shouldnt follow the camp

and Julliet shouldnt either.
You shouldnt follow the camp
and neither should Julliet.

He cant play tennis. I cant

play tennis.

He cant play tennis and I

PATTERN 3
But form: to combine two contradictory
sentences in the same tense.
Subject + Positive/Negative Aux (Modal) ... + But + Subject +
Negative/Positive Aux (Modal) ...

E.g:
Ali can play the guitar. Amir
cant play the guitar.

Ali can play the guitar, but

Amir cant.

Arifah is a student. Fatima is

not a student.

Arifah is a student, but Fatima

isnt.

She didnt buy a new book.

You bought a new book.

She didnt buy a new book,

but you did.

I dont like banana. He likes

banana.

I dont like banana, but he

does.

PATTERN 4
To combine two positive sentences which have
same VO/C but different S, or same SV but
different O/C.
Both .......... and ..........

He studies English. I study

E.g:
English.

Both he and I study English.

Kate was happy. William was

happy.

Both Kate and William were

happy.

You can drive the bicycle. You

can drive the car.

You can drive both the bicycle

and the car.

Nial has borrowed a novel.

Nial has borrowed a
dictionary.

Nial has borrowed both a

novel and a dictionary.

PATTERN 5
To explain one of two actions in two sentences
with
the same tense.
Either .......... or ..........

E.g:
We can read a newspaper. We We can either read a
can play the piano.

newspaper or play the piano.

You may play football. You

may play tennis.

You may play either football

or tennis.

I open the door. Ray opens

the door.

Either I or Ray opens the

door.

He will take it. I will take it.

Either he or I will take it.

PATTERN 6
To explain that both of them are not from two
actions in positive sentence with the same tense.
Neither .......... nor ..........

E.g:
My brother isnt a policeman.
My brother isnt a postman.

My brother is neither a
policeman nor a postman.

He doesnt want a pencil. He

doesnt want a book.

He wants neither a pencil nor

a book.

She wasnt happy. They

werent happy.

Neither she nor they were

happy.

I didnt buy a car. My friend

didnt buy a car.

Neither I nor my friend

bought a car.
