DEFINATION OF MATERIAL
HANDLING
Movement and storage of material at the
lowest possible cost through the use of proper
methods and equipments.
Lifting, shifting and placing of material which
effect a saving in money, time and place.
Art and science of conveying , elevating,
positioning , transporting, packaging and storing
of materials.

Scope of Materials
Handling
The traditional point of view
Plant wide concern for overall flow of materials
The systems point of view

Importance of Materials
Handling
Efficient materials handling is important to

manufacture operations.
Materials handling analysis is a subset of plant

layout.

Objective of Materials
Handling
The main objective of material handling is

to reduce the number of handlings as well

as the over all cost of materials handling
equipments and reducing the distance
through which the materials are handled.

The following may be considered as

other objectives of material
handling:
1.Lower unit materials handling costs.
2.Reduction in manufacturing cycle time through

faster movement of materials and by and

reducing the distance through which the materials
are moved . Reduction in manufacturing cycle
time results in reduced work in progress inventory
costs.
3.Contribution towards a better control of the flow
of materials through the manufacturing facilities.

The following may be considered as

other objectives of material
handling(conti):
4. Improved working conditions and greater
safety in the movement of materials.
5. Contribute to better quality by avoiding
damage to products by inefficient
handling
6. Higher productivity at lower
manufacturing cost.

Materials Handling
Principles:
1. Materials should move through the facility in
direct flow patterns, minimizing the zigzagging or backtracking.
2. Related production processes should be
arranged to provide for direct material flows.
3. Mechanized materials handling devices
should be designed and located so that
human effort is minimized.
4. Heavy and bulk materials should be moved
to the shortest distance during processing.

Materials Handling Principles

(conti):
5. The number of times each material is

handled should be minimized.

6. Systems flexibility should allow for
unexpected breakdowns of materials
handling equipments, changes in
production system technology , etc.
7. Mobile equipments should carry full loads
all the times.

Materials Handling Costs

The cost of materials handling arise from two sourcesThe cost of owning and maintaining the equipment
The cost of operating the system
There are three fundamentals ways of minimizing

the costs :
1.Eliminating the handling itself whenever and
wherever possible.
2.Mechanizing, largely by conveyors & power driven
trucks, whatever handling still remains.
3.Making necessary handling more efficient.

Conveyers

Belt Conveyers

A mechanical apparatus consisting of a

continuous moving belt that transports materials or
packages from one place to another.

(Modular Plastic BeltConveyors)

Chain conveyor

Chain conveyors utilize a powered continuous chain

arrangement, carrying a series of single pendants. The
chain arrangement is driven
by motor, and the material suspended on the pendants
are conveyed. Chain conveyors are used for moving
products down an assembly line and/or around a

Roller conveyor
A conveyor consisting of fixed-location rollers

over which materials are moved by gravity or

propulsion.
