WHAT IS A POWER SUPPLY?

A power supply is a component that
supplies power to at least one electric
load.
Typically, it converts one type of electrical
power to another, but it may also convert
a different form of energy - such as solar,
mechanical, or chemical - into electrical
energy.

Transformer
Transformers are used to convert
electricity from one voltage to another
with minimal loss of power.
They only work with AC (alternating
current) because they require a changing
magnetic field to be created in their core.
Transformers can increase voltage (stepup) as well as reduce voltage (stepdown).

Rectifier diodes
Rectifier diodes are used in power
supplies to convert alternating current
(AC) to direct current (DC), a process
called 'rectification'.
There are two different rectification
circuits, known as 'half-wave' and 'fullwave' rectifiers.
Both use components called diodes to
convert AC into DC.

Filter/smoothing Capacitor
Capacitors store electric charge.
They are used with resistors in timing
circuits because it takes time for a
capacitor to fill with charge.
They are also used in filter circuits
because capacitors easily pass AC
(changing) signals but they block DC
(constant) signals.

Electrolytic capacitors are polarised

andthey must be connected the
correct way round- at least one of their
leads will be marked + or -.

Voltage regulator
A voltage regulator generates a fixed
output voltage of a preset magnitude that
remains constant regardless of changes
to its input voltage or load conditions.

Tinkering

What is TINKERING?
The Oxford Dictionaries says thatto
tinkeris toattempt to repair or
improve something in a casual or
desultory (unfocused) way.
The definition above suggests that its
aboutimproving something by
making changes to it.
The Free Dictionary says that a tinkerer
isone who enjoysexperimenting
withand repairing machine parts.
