COMPETENCY SIX
Engage with Individuals , Families, Groups, Organizations, and
Communities

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 6.17

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, personin-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to
engage with clients and constituencies.
Example : I constantly engage with women in the shelter to become
aware of their individual situations as well as what their individual needs
and goals are for them and their children.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 6.18

Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage
diverse clients and constituencies.
Example: On a daily basis we receive clients in domestic situations
sometimes who were recently battered and you can see the proof so it is
important to be empathetic to their individual situation and to use
interpersonal skills to help them to a safe haven and help them get out of
the abuse

Fall 2016

COMPETENCY SEVEN
Assess individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.19

Collect and organize data, and apply critical thinking to interpret
information from clients and constituencies.
Example: Every client we receive we fill out a crisis report on them as well
as a danger assessment to see what is the nature of the abuse whether it
be verbal, financial, or physical abuse so we as advocates can know what
we are dealing with and how to help them help themselves.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.20

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment, personin-environment, and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in
interventions with clients and constituencies.
Example: Working with the women in the shelter to empower them to
come up with a safety plan for them and their children, as well as
assisting with protection orders from their abusers

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.21

Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals and objectives based on
the critical assessment of strengths, needs, and challenges within clients
and constituencies.
Example: Encourage the women to practice the empowerment model
while allowing them to go to apply for housing, jobs, and taking them to
the necessary locations.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.22

Select appropriate intervention strategies based on the assessment,
research, knowledge, and values and preferences of clients and
constituencies.
Example: Meeting with advocates in the office to discuss each client on
an individual need and finding out what each women needs help with
whether it be a referral or clothes.
