Definition
An RLC circuit is an electrical circuit consisting of
a resistor (R), an inductor (L), and a capacitor
(C), connected in series or in parallel.

Because of the Resistance, so the current

oscillation in RLC causes Damped Harmonic
Motion.
Damped Harmonic Motion is Oscillation motion with
changing amplitude

Damped Harmonic Motion is one of physical model

that important for several industrial aplication.

Example Oscillation on spring

Damped Harmonic Motion

In General Oscillation system not all
oscillating without friction. However, all the
oscillations have friction or referred to in the style
of damping.

So, the motion of the oscillation is

called a damped harmonic motion with
movement, no longer resembles a
simple harmonic motion.

General Case Damped

Oscillation
1. Under Damped that needs a long time to reach
equilibrium

2. Over Damped, who do a few swings before stop

3. Critical Dumping, the equilibrium reached fastly

Type of Oscillation Wave

Damped Oscillator (a) Oscillator continue (b)

Damped Harmonic Motion in RLC series

following the terms of damping in general,
in which oscillatory motion to the spring
where R is identical to b, L synonymous with
m, 1 / C is identical to k. Thus obtained:

Under Damped

Over Damped:

Critical Damping:

Any motion that repeats itself at regular intervals

is called periodic motion or harmonic motion.
Basic type of oscillation called simple harmonic
motion.

One important property of oscillatory motion is its

frequency, or number of oscillations that are
completed each second. The symbol for frequency
is f, and its SI unit is the hertz (abbreviated Hz)

1 hertz =1 Hz = 1 oscillation per second 1 s

The Velocity of SHM

We can find an expression for the
velocity of a particle moving with simple
harmonic motion

The Acceleration of
SHM
We can find an expression for the acceleration of
the oscillating particle by differentiating once more

Once we know how the acceleration of a

particle varies with time, we can use Newtons
second law to learn what force must act on the
particle to give it that acceleration.

This resulta restoring force that is proportional

to the displacement but opposite in signis
familiar. It is Hookes law :

The blockspring system forms a linear simple

harmonic oscillator (linear oscillator, for short), where
linear indicates that F is proportional to x rather than
to some other power of x. The angular frequency of the
simple harmonic motion of the block is related to the
spring constant k and the mass m of the block, which
yields

Energy of linear oscillation

The potential energy of a linear oscillator :

The kinetic energy of a linear oscillator :

Oscillation and RLC

Oscillation movement in spring has similarity with

oscillation movement in RLC series.
In spring discuss about distance is x and
velocity is v, so in RLC series discuss about
charge is q and current is I.
