WHAT ARE SMART

MATERIALS?

Materials that have the ability to change

shape or size simply by adding a little
heat or to change from a liquid to a solid,
those materials called smart materials.
In other words materials in the 21st
century that are developed with a
property of properly adapting to
environmental changes favorably are
called smart materials

BRIEF ACCOUNT ON BIOSMART DENTISTRY

The main aspect of any biomaterial or
rather a smart material is that it should
have a high biocompatibility.
SMART MATERIALS have a wide use in the
field of dentistry because of their:
exceptional super elasticity,
good shape memory
resistance to wear.

REQUIREMENTS OF SMART
MATERIALS

Materials are now being developed which

are smart enough to reduce failures by
adding additives to the materials smart
materials are required to be able to
Prevent secondary caries
Prevent fracture of restoration
Prevent fracture of tooth
Provide a good marginal integrity
Reduce wear

CLASSIFICATION

Smart materials can be classified into:

Passive
Active

Indirect
adhesiv
e

Direct

COMPOSITION

Powder

Silica 35-50%
Alumina 20-30%
AlF3 1.5-2.5%
CaF2 15-20%
NaF 3-6%
AlPO4 4-12%
LA,Sr, Ba, - traces

Liquid
PA 45%
Itaconic acid
Maleic acid
Tricarboxylic acid
5%
Tartaric acid
Water 50%

Glass:- prepared by melting alumina,

silica,metal oxides,metal fluorides,metal
phosphates at temperatures higher than
1100c
Metal ions from Al,Ca, Sr, Zn, Na, K, La.
Phosphate and fluoride - to reduce melting
temp. in the production process
Incorporate into glass composition-modify
setting charecterstics
La2O3,SrO-radiopaque.
Maleic acid ,itaconic acid.

SMART COMPOSITES

Ion releasing composite materials

Releases F-, hydroxyl and calcium ions as pH
drops in area immediately adjacent to the
restorative material.
Result of active plaque results in
corresponding increase in release of
functional ions
Based on newly developed alkaline glass filler,
which reduce sec. caries formation at the
margin of resto. by inhibiting bact. growth.

SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS

WHAT ARE NITINOL BRACES?

NITINOL is an alloy of nickel and

titanium.
It was introduced in the year 1972
to the field of Orthodontics.
This alloy is used as braces to
correct dental malformations.
These braces move only 6mm in 6
months-MINIMAL DISCOMFORT.

WHAT ARE SMART

FIBRES ?

Laser radiation of high- fluency can be

easily delivered by Hollow-core
photonic-fibers (PCFs) i.e., the laser
radiations can easily be snaked
through the body using this hollow-core
photonic-fibers which are capable of
ablating tooth enamel been developed.
These photonic fibers are known as
SMART FIBERS.

CONCLUSION

There is a plethora of direct & indirect adh.

resto.mat. Dentist may overwhelmed by the
choices. One mat. offers little adv. over
another. However push for esthetics
continues to grow, so will our list of materials.

Development of dental materials has

revolutionized dentistry, adding different
functionality to these materials may further
enhance the performance of these materials
clinically.
