INTRODUCTION
Aerodynamics is the study of properties of moving
air and the interaction between air and solid
moving through it.

It is the way , air moves around things. The rules of

aerodynamics explain how an airplane is able to fly.

A kite in the sky, Rocket, Birds, even a Car react to

Aerodynamics.

WHAT IS A WING ?

A wing is a type of fin with a

Surface that produces
Aerodynamic forces facilitating
movement through air and other
gases, or water and other liquids.

FORCES ACTING ON AIRPLANE WINGS

The forces acting on an airplane
wings are lift, weight, thrust and drag.

Lift: It is the upward force on a plane.

The magnitude of lift depends on
the shape, size & velocity. Faster
the plane greater the lift.

Mostly Lift is produced by wings

and must be greater than weight
during take off.

Weight:
The earths gravity pulls down
an object and gives them
weight. Weight concentrates lift.

Thrust:
It is the forward push that gets
the plane into the air. It is
created artificially used to
overcome drag and sustain lift.
It is also used to accelerate and
gain altitude.

Drag:
It is a mechanical force generated by a solid object
moving through a fluid.
The magnitude of drag depends on the shape, air
quality and velocity. Drag increase when air speed
increases.
A pilot must overcome drag with thrust to gain
speed.

For an airplane take off

: LIFT > WEIGHT
For an airplane speed up : THRUST > DRAG
Which of these airplanes will speed
up?
Which will slow down?

FACTORS CAUSING PERFECT FLYING

Aerodynamics of an airplane wings depends

upon wings thickness, air flow velocity, speed of
plane, thickness of wings, etc.
Boundary layer plays an important role in
aerodynamics.

APPLICATIONS
Automobiles (moving car, bike, bus, truck etc. )
Design of large buildings and bridges

Wind turbine design

Aircrafts

CONCLUSION

Aerodynamics plays an important role in our day

to day life. Aerodynamics helps us to make a
kite fly. A bird also follows aerodynamics.
Pilots have main role in controlling of the
aircraft.
