Case Study 1 TZED

Homes

The Problem:
Summer of 2012 Serious water shortage, leading
to rationing, irrational emotion-venting, etc.
10 water tankers per day insufficient to cater to
demand.
High water usage with having insights into usage
vs. leakage.
Water rationing, metering (with 5 inlets per house)
discussed and partially implemented.
Water was a perennial topic in the MC meetings
and GBMs with nothing else getting enough time.

Solution to TZED Homes

Focus on water usage Reduce (plug leaks, aerators, etc)
Strengthen Rain Water and treated water harvesting

from the earlier 90% implementation to 100% working

implementation.
Reuse no water is waste water; it is just waste of water;

redirected all waste water to the drain to filters to be

reused. Result is that no water now is sent out of the
campus boundaries.

From Dec 2012 till date, zero water tankers have entered
the campus. Prior to that, 10 water tankers were needed
per day with water rationing; no rationing since then, even
when construction activities took place.
Zero incidence of RO water contamination in the past 4
years; closed loop recycling is not even news within the
campus today.
* Based on an average rainfall of 100cm per year and campus size of 5 acres

Case Study 2 Sarjapur House

The Problem
Sarjapur has poor ground water, leading to borewells

reaching 1200 feet (and then, one may get water!!).

Large Garden area required lots of water for growing

greenery around the house.

Small family means low amount of grey and black water,

where commercial STP technology does not work.

Solution and Design Principle:
Harvest rain, grey and black water, thereby reusing each

drop 2-3 times.

Different filters for different needs; design for maintainability.
Use nature processes for sewage treatment, with plants

doing the work of final cleaning, instead of mechanized

plants.

Outcomes
50,000L Sump to store rain water, with a mid-partition

for borewell water not mixing with rain water.

2013-2016 data suggests that rain water is sufficient
for between 8-10 months of the year, with shortage
managed by tanker water.
Monthly water consumption including garden (about
6000 sft) reduced to 10,000L; per capita per day
consumption at this rate is 110L per person.
Further optimization opportunities being pursued to
reach full self-sufficiency with rain water:
Increase rainwater capture efficiency by redesign of filter;
Drip irrigation for gardens
Deepening of open well from 15 feet to 25 feet

Case Study 3 Maple Sarjapur

Apartment Complex
Problem:
No ground water available in site location; builder
planned 10+ tankers of water per day, but wanted to
explore water alternatives at planning stage.
Compact land for 75 apartment complex (4 stories
high), offers some relief through rainwater harvesting.
Design:
STP-treated water further treated and passed through
central RO for reuse in bathrooms and all other outlets.
For Kitchen, due to psychological reasons, direct
borewell or tanker water pumped.
STP-treated water used in dual plumbing for flushing
and for gardens.
