WHAT IS REINFORCED CEMENT

CONCRETE?
RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete)is the
combination of using steel and concrete instead
of using only concrete to offset some limitations.
Concrete is weak in tensile stress with
compared to its compressive stress. To offset this
limitation, steel reinforcement is used in the
concrete at the place where the section is
subjected to tensile stress. Steel is very strong
in tensile stress and has a good bonding
capacity with cement.

MATERIALS COMPOSITION IN R.C.C.

Rebar (short for reinforcing bar), also known as
reinforcing steel, reinforcement steel, is a steel bar or
mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in
reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry
structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in
tension.
Rebar is versatile enough to be bent or assembled to
support the shape of any concrete structure. Carbon
steel is the most common rebar material. However,
stainless steel, galvanized steel and epoxy coating
can be used to prevent corrosion

a carefully proportioned mixture of cement,
sand and gravel or other coarse aggregate and water to
harden in forms of the shape and of dimensions of
the desired structure.

If a material with high strength in tension,

placed in concrete, then the composite material,
reinforced concrete, resists not only compression
but also bending and other direct tensile actions.

HOW IS RCC USED IN CONSTRUCTION?

Many different types of structures and components of
structures can be built using reinforced concrete
includingslabs, walls,beams,columns,foundations,
framesand more.
Reinforced concrete can be classified
asprecastorcast-in-place concrete.
Precast concrete: is a construction product
produced by casting concrete in a reusablemoldor
"form" which is then cured in a controlled
environment, transported to the construction site and
lifted into place.
Cast-in-place concrete: Cast-in-place concrete is
transported in an unhardened state, primarily as
ready-mix, and placed in forms. Ready mixed concrete
is proportioned and mixed off the project site.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERSTICS OF RCC?

The main characteristics of reinforced

concrete is similarity of its coefficient of

thermal expansion with that of steel, due
to which the internal stresses initiated due
to variation in thermal expansion or
contraction are eliminated.

Secondly, on the hardening of the cement paste inside

the concrete, it corresponds to the surface features of

the steel, allowing the stresses to be efficiently
transmitted between the two materials. The cohesive
characteristics between the steel and concrete are
enhanced by the roughening of steel bars.
Thirdly, a film is formed on the steel because of the

alkaline environment created by lime, due to which the

steel becomes extra-resistant to corrosion.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES:
The most valuable feature of concrete is its high
compressive strength, which finds wide application
in concrete and reinforced concrete structures.
Compressive strength is the principal parameter
determining grades and classes of concretes.
The relative cross-sectionalareaof steel required
for typical reinforced concrete is usually quite small
and varies from 1% for most beams and slabs to
6% for some columns. Reinforcing barsare
normally round in cross-section and vary in
diameter. Reinforced concrete structures
sometimes have provisions such as ventilated
hollow cores to control their moisture & humidity.

ADVANTAGES OF USING RCC

Reinforced Cement Concrete has good

compressive stress (because of concrete).

RCC also has high tensile stress (because of steel).

It has good resistance to damage by fire and

weathering (because of concrete).

RCC protects steel bars from buckling and twisting

at the high temperature.

RCC prevents steel from rusting.

Reinforced Concrete is durable.
The monolithic character of reinforced concrete

gives it more rigidity.

Maintenance cost of RCC is practically nil.
