Proposal for the VLS Research Strategy

Aim of the Research Strategy:
Align with the Australian Strategic Research Policy
(ERA) and the Murdoch University Research
Strategy
Build on existing strengths (linked to ERA
performance) to develop a compelling and robust
research strategy for the school
Identify 4-9 Research Themes for VLS that have
depth, breadth and National/International recognition
Develop the VLS Strategic Research Document for
ARC, other Category 1 Grants, Philanthropy and
Industry Support
External School Advisory Funding Board

Australian Government's Strategic Research P

riorities
Living in a changing environment
Identify vulnerabilities and boundaries to the adaptability of changing natural and human
systems
Manage risk and capture opportunities for sustainable natural and human systems
Enable societal transformation to enhance sustainability and wellbeing

With global change and increasing human population, we

have a need to maintain, improve and manage natural,
agricultural and managed ecosystems and ensure their
health for future generations.

Our Research Themes

The School of Veterinary & Life Sciences is a highly

integrated, research-intensive school, with 130 research
staff, 30 research associates, and 300 doctoral students
working across six Research Themes in Animal & Human
Health, Plant & Animal Primary Production, and Ecosystems.
In addition to traditional approaches, we apply state-of-theart tools (including remote sensing, molecular biology, omic
technologies, and bioinformatics) to address and solve key
research questions.
Our R&D is both fundamental and outcome focused. We
maintain strong links to industry to ensure translation and
