ISSUES...

Why are we interested in research?

What is research?
Key concepts and issues
Introduction to validity

WHY MUST WE
UNDERSTAND RESEARCH?
help make informed decisions
need to produce research in career
evaluating research in the media

Why is research a valued source

of knowledge?
Common ways of knowing
personal experience/intuition
experts/traditions/authority
scientific method

WHAT IS RESEARCH?
RESEARCH
is an organized way of
solving a problem or
establishing the answer
to a query.
It is the manner by which
the individual articulates
the meaning of facts and
data.

RESEARCH AS A PROCESS
Research begins
with an unanswered
question in the mind
of the researcher
Research
1
interprets the
meaning of the
2
facts which leads 6
to the resolution
RESEARCH
of the problem
IS A
Research looks for CYCLIC
PROCESS
the fact directed
5
3
by the hypotheses
and guided by the
4
problem
Research poses
tentative solutions to
the problem(s)
through appropriate
hypotheses

Research sees
the goal in a
clear statement
of the problem
Research
subdivides
the problem
into
appropriate
sub-problems

TYPES OF
RESEARCH

Causal Research
When most people think of scientific
experimentation, research on cause and
effect is most often brought to mind.
Experiments on causal relationships
investigate the effect of one or more
variables on one or more outcome variables.
This type of research also determines if one
variable causes another variable to occur or
change.

Descriptive Research
Descriptive research seeks to depict what
already exists in a system. Descriptive
studies do not seek to measure the effect
of a variable; they seek only to describe.

Relational Research
A study that investigates the connection
between two or more variables is
considered relational research. The
variables that are compared are generally
already present in the system.

Example
descriptive
e.g., percentage of regular exercisers

relational
e.g., link between age and exercise

causal
e.g., effect of behavior change intervention on
exercise participation

Applied Research
Applied Research:
Research
done with the intention of
applying the results of its finding
to solving specific problems
currently being experienced in
the organization.

Basic Research
Research done with the intention to
generate more knowledge and
understanding of the phenomena that
occur and to build theories based on the
research results.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH AND

DEVELOPMENT MANDATE
Article XIV of the 1987 Philippine
Constitution
The state shall give priority to research and
development, invention, innovation and their
utilization; to science and technology education,
training and services. It shall support indigenous,
appropriate
and
self-reliant
scientific
and
technological capabilities, and their application to the
countrys productive systems and national life. --------

FROM TBL PERSPECTIVE

WHY DO WE HAVE
TO CONDUCT
RESEARCH?

OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH
To produce new knowledge, process or
product;
To evaluate the impact of individual item of
software and hardware that are currently in
use; and
To improve the characteristics of each item
of hardware and software for societal
benefits.

RESEARCH MUST BE MANAGED TO

PRODUCE THE BEST BENEFIT, THE
SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME WITH THE
LEAST OF RESOURCES
There are many global
problems requiring immediate
solutions
The Philippines needs to leapfrog into development
Competition is keener in the
global perspective
There is opportunity in
networking
The resources for R&D are
limited
RESEARCH MANAGEMENT IS BOTH AT THE
LEVEL OF THE PROPONENT(S) AND THE
LEVEL OF THE ORGANIZATION
