Units of Measurements
Mensuration is the process of or act of assigning
number to phenomena according to a rule. Every
measurement requires

a number

a unit to express it

Macroscopic properties are measured directly.

Microscopic properties are deduced by interpreting

some of the macroscopic properties.

Measurements needs expression in standardized unit.

+
Base (Fundamental) Units
There are 7 basic (base) units of measurements.
The table shows seven base quantities and the SI units used for them.

+
Measurements of Length

The Unit of Length is Meter. (m)

Measurement of a distance, measurement of a box,

measurement of a belt; which is length.

The definition of length is a linear extent in space from

one end to the other, the size of the gap between 2
points of places.

+
Measurements of Length

They have many tools to find the measurements, such as:

RULERS

MEASURING TAPES

Vernier Caliper and Micrometer Screw Gauge are also used for
more precise measurements.

+
Measurements of Mass &
These
2 are not the same thing!!!
Weight

Mass determines amount of matter in an object.

The basic unit for Mass is Kilogram (kg)

Weight is the gravitational acceleration experienced by

an object.

The basic unit for weight is Newton (N)

+
Measurements of Mass &
Weight

The tools use for measuring mass and weight included

TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE, DIGITAL BALANCE, MASS
BALANCE, AND SPRING BALANCE.

+
Measurements of Time

Time is an instance or single occasion for some event.

The Unit for time is second (s)

We can use watches, clocks, and pendulum as the tools

for measuring time.

+
Measurements of Time

Pendulum

a period of it depend only on its length; its mass has no

effect.

A period is the time of a back-and-forth swing of the

pendulum.

The longer the pendulum, the longer the period.

+
Measurements of Temperature

Temperature is a measurement of the average kinetic

energy at the particles in a sample. Celsius and Kelvin
are most often used.

Celsius scale is based on the properties of water. 0c is

the boiling point of water. And 100c is the boiling point.

A Kelvin is the Celsius plus with 273.15.

There is no negative Kelvin temperature.

+
Volume

The space occupied by a substance, the water in

the tank The space in an empty box; these are
volume.

It is measured in cube length. (cm3) The most

commonly used metric unit for volume liter and
milliliter.

There are regular and irregular objects.

The volume of regular object is the length of the

object multiplying by its width and height. For the
irregular object, there are others method to find its
volume. The displacement method is usually used.
