Excited to Learn

September 21, 2016

A slight digression to start

Motivation is to learning as oxygen is to breathing
Or is it?
Oxygen is the life-essential that the act of breathing
gives us access to just as learning is the life essential
that the act of motivation gives us access to,
therefore.
Oxygen is to breathing as learning is to motivation

Who are we as we read this text?

Teachers?
Coaches?
Principals?
Learning-focused leaders?
All of the above?

Our guiding questions tonight:

What am I seeing? --->
What conversations will I have, based on what I am
seeing?--->
What PD will I develop, based on those conversations?
Alternatively: How does Excited to Learn become a
lens through which we can view SuperVision?

Chapter One: Culture and Motivation

to Learn

Motivation as essential for learning (p.2)

The culture-motivation connection (p.3ff)

Challenges to and changes within the dominant culture

With an elbow partner, review the list of 13 values with alternatives on

pages 18-19. Which value or alternative challenges you the most?
Which feels the most comfortable? Why? How do those feelings affect
your leadership?

Why is culture so important to motivation?

"The Danger of A Single Story"

Chapter Two: Critical Features of a Motivating

and Culturally Responsive Classroom

I
A
M
Competent!

I AM Competent in action?

Think about the teachers and classrooms we read about in Mission

High

With an elbow partner, discuss how those teachers demonstrated one or

more of the 4 quadrants (pg. 27)

A closer look jigsaw.

In groups of four

Each group member pick a chapter 3-6

Chapter 3s meet together (Salmon room), 4s together (Mt. Tahoma), 5s

(lobby), 6s (Cedar room)

In your chapter group, take until 7:15 to become experts on your chapter
together.

Come back together in your group of four at 7:15 and teach each other the
chapter that you are now experts in.

Return to Mt. Tahoma at 8:00

Remember our guiding question: how can Excited to Learn serve as a lens
for SuperVision?

What now.
What is one takeaway that you can
implement now in your current role?
What is one takeaway that you are
looking forward to incorporating into
your instructional supervision?
