WHAT IS S3 (DOCTORATE
DEGREE)?
A doctorate (from Latin docere, "to teach") or doctor's
degree (from Latin doctor, "teacher") or doctoral
degree is the highest level of academic degree. There
are a variety of doctoral degrees, with the most common
being the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
In Indonesia, doctoral degree is commonly known as
strata-3 (S3) educational level. And the academic title
given is Doktor (Dr.) for every types of doctorate.
In most countries, doctoral degree is a qualification to
teach at the university level in the degree's field, or to
work in a specific profession.

HOW TO EARN S3 (DOCTORATE

DEGREE)?
A person who want to earn doctorate degree have to
already earned masters degree in the same subject
area youre pursuing a doctorate degree.
It may only take three years of study to complete. The
length and credits of doctorate programs can vary.
Doctorate degree candidates begin by taking courses
and exams, go on to taking advanced seminars and
designing dissertation research, and complete their
requirements by researching, writing, and defending a
dissertation. A dissertation is the doctoral-level
thesis.

S3 (DOCTORATE DEGREE) IN
INDONESIA
In Indonesia, applicants of doctorate programs in Indonesia,
especially for lecturers and researchers, is still lacking. As a
result, doctorate degrees quota is not fulfilled and scholarships
are available not utilized.
This is one of the factors inhibiting the advancement of high-level
education in Indonesia, which is the lack of qualified lecturers;
can be seen by the small presence of lecturers with doctorate
degree.
However, from year to year universities that offer doctorate
programs in Indonesia is growing. Ministry of Education and
Culture issued a breakthrough by PDSU (Program Doktor Sarjana
Unggulan) which has been started from 2013. This is an
educational program that aims to provide competent lecturers
with doctorate qualifications.
So, I hope that with the number of doctorate degree graduates in
Indonesia can improve the quality of education in Indonesia.
