INTRODUCTION
When choosing a career you need to know your interests, personality, strengths your country’s needs as well as your dreams for
your future. One needs to consider the subjects that are relevant to your intending career, opportunities available in that
field, the job conditions and remuneration.
When choosing a career here are the questions to guide you in your decision making process:
Do your personal qualities fit with the career?
Did you choose a career path with many options and opportunities?
Why have you chosen that career?
What is the demand for that chosen career
Have you spoken to your family, friends, teachers as well as people in that career field?
Have you gone to the libraries, Internet café, and institutions of higher learning to gather as much information as you can because
you have to make an informed decision and though finally the choice is yours?

Teaching Approach

In my lesson I am going to use constructivism, according to constructivism learning always builds upon pre existing knowledge. It
is believed that learning is more effective when a learner is actively engaged in the learning process rather than receiving
knowledge passively. In contrast to other theories, according to Constructivists the teacher leads the learner through
questions and activities to discover discuss, verbalise the new knowledge (Wilkepedia).
Furthermore, Constructivist theory says that learners learn best when they are allowed to construct a personal understanding
based on experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. Audrey Grey puts it when she describes, the
constructivists classroom:
Learners are actively involved.
The environment is democratic
Activities are interactive and student centred
The teacher facilitates a process of learning in which students are encouraged to be responsible and autonomous.
Therefore, in designing the website, I will use constructivist theory by actively involving learners and make the classroom
environment to be democratic. All activities will be interactive and learner centred. I will facilitate the process of learning in
which learners are encouraged to be responsible and independent.

I am a Life orientation teacher teaching at a high school in one of the townships in Soweto. Our learners are from the townships around
Soweto and the informal settlements (Noxzema Park, Motsoaledi and Freedom Park). The majority of these learners are from very

poor background and have many barriers like poverty, language barrier (English medium). They can use cell phones to browse
information, take and send photos, make Sms’s but few of them can use computers. They can use cd ROMs for music. They can use
libraries and go to institutions of higher learning to gather information. Few of them can use Internet to search for information hence
they are not much exposed to the computers. They are not proficient with windows interface. Since these learners are from the
townships and the informal settlement, most of their families are not highly educated and are lacking motivation. They are not self-
motivated because they always require an authority of an educator in order to learn. Some of them just drop out from school due to
factors like pregnancy, poverty, drug and alcohol.

Careers and career choices.

1. Learning Outcome: 4
At the end of the lesson learners will be able to:
Demonstrate self-knowledge and the ability to make an informed decision regarding further study, career fields and career paths.

2. Assessment Standards.
Learner will:
Demonstrate self-awareness and exploring socio economic factors as considerations in their subjects, career and study choices.
Investigate the diversity of jobs according to economic sectors, as well as work settings and forms of activities in each of these factors in
relation to themselves.

3. Critical Outcomes and developmental outcomes.

Learners will:
Investigate their funding options.
Do research on their intended careers.
Follow the latest trends and demand in the jobs.

In this lesson, learners will be interviewing different people of their intending careers, searching information from the Internet, etc. They will be
using computers to search, to write report on their researches, and to write application letters. Computers will show people of different
careers, play videos of interviews, applying to different institutions of higher learning and for jobs. Computers should have speakers for
the sound. There should be a normal set up and the arrangement of the computer room. Computers will be 25 and there will be a flash
plug in and or a multimedia.

Learner activities

They will be required to gather information about their intended careers.

Create a questionnaire for the interview.
Conduct an interview.
Write a report on interview.

THE DESIGN PHASE
In life orientation, Career and career choices is learning outcome 4. This learning outcome is about making a decision on how to choose a career. In order to cover this learning outcome, the learner will have the following

Skills:
Use internet to browse information, go to libraries and read career books, magazines, newspapers, talk to people of their intended careers, go to institutions of higher learning.

Knowledge:
After gathering the information they will be aware of their personalities, interests, skills and will be able to make their choices.

Attitudes and beliefs:

Each learner will now understand and or believe that people are different and have different personalities, interests, abilities, skills and choices. Therefore one cannot choose a career because of a friend or a parent. A person needs to make his/her own decision considering the above factors.

Type of activities
Search for information.
Prepare a questionnaire.
Conduct interview.
Write a report.
Apply to different institutions of higher learning or apply for jobs.
Fill in application forms.

Developing initial stage

 Learning will be facilitated the instructional goals and objectives of

the lesson will be negotiated by telling the learners what is
expected of them at the end of the lesson.
 By stressing the interrelatedness and providing of the learning
content.
 Providing tools and environment that will be conducive to learners
and help learners to interpret the learning content. The focus will
be on knowledge construction rather than reproduction.
Collaborative construction of knowledge will be supported. Errors
will be used as mechanism to provide feedback on learner’s
understanding. Learners will be assessed by doing activities that
will test their understanding. Assessment will be authentic. They
will be helped to perform beyond their limits

Methodology
The following methods will be used:
Searching for relevant resources
Gathering and analysing data
Participating in a discussion
Answering questions on a subject
Comparing, contrasting and summarising information
Repeatedly recalling and applying knowledge
Factors associated with Methodology
Feedback will be given after each activity. Revision will be done so that each learner is aware of the
mistakes done to avoid repetition.

Question types
Question and answer,
Searching for information,
Writing reports, application letters and filling in forms.

Learner control
Learners will be monitored to check their progress

Motivation
It is given on each attempt.
