Personal protective equipment

(PPE)
Personal protective

equipment (PPE) refers to

protective clothing, helmets,
goggles, or other garments or
equipment designed to
protect the wearer's body
from injury or infection
PPE is needed when there are

hazards present.

The purpose of personal

protective equipment is to
reduce employee exposure to
hazards when engineering and
administrative controls are not
feasible or effective to reduce
these risks to acceptable levels.
PPE has the serious limitation

that it does not eliminate the

hazard at source and may result
in employees being exposed to
the hazard if the equipment fails.
2

PPEs should be a last

Option
First it is tried that no
hazard should be
present
Elimination of risk
Replacement of
hazard with non
hazardous
arrangement
Engineering controls
which seek to design
safer mechanisms.

Administrative

controls coach safer

human behavior is
implemented
Personal protective
equipment ranks last
as the workers are
regularly exposed to
the hazard.
3

Classification of PPEs
Mandatory
Compulsory for all the
working personnels
within the plant area i.e.
helmet, safety shoes, pent
shirt., glasses etc.

Specific
These are particular related
to specific for jobs and
depend upon the nature of
job i.e. harness, aprons, face
shield etc.

Description of PPEs
1. Safety Helmets
Employees are required to wear
protective helmets when working in
areas that involve the risk of a head
injury from impact, falling or flying
objects, or electrical shock and
burns.
Varieties in colours of helmet are
available and organizations may
have different codes related to
them. In addition to protection,
they may also be used for
recognitions as safety department
have different coloured helmet in
some companies.

Description of PPEs
2. Safety Shoes
Appropriate

footwear that is
effective in preventing or limiting
injury shall be worn by employees
who are exposed to conditions that
cause foot injuries.
We recommend safety shoes with
Steel Toe. Safety shoes are
compulsory and integral part of
PPEs for the person working in
any part of the plant. Plant
construction and expansion is in
progress so over here maximum
chance of foot injury may occur.

Description of PPEs
3.Gloves
Gloves protect the hands and arms
from
chemicals,
temperature
extremes, and abrasion. Proper
selection and use is vital to a
gloves ability to protect an
employees hand.
Different types of gloves are
available like rubber gloves,
leather gloves or Rexene gloves,
asbestos gloves depending upon
the type of work being carried out
means either person is working in
field or engaged in which activity.

Ear Plugs & Muffs

There are two forms of hearing protectors: ear

plugs and ear muffs. Each has specific

advantages based on wearer comfort, work
environment, and cost. Both are designed to
reduce noise to an acceptable level based on
the level and type of noise and the type of
hearing protector. Therefore, proper selection
is important.
According regulations that are internationally
accepted, all employees who are exposed to
noise in excess of an eight-hour time-weighted
average sound level of 85 dB (decibels, Aweighted) shall wear hearing protectors. But
we recommend wearing ear protector at an
average of 75 dB during day time and 65 dB
during night for the person exposed to sound
for 8 hours.

Description of PPEs
5.Safety Glasses & Goggles
Appropriate eye protection shall
be provided to and worn by
employees whose jobs expose
them to eye hazards.
The minimum acceptable form
of eye protection is safety
glasses. Impact and/or chemical
resistant goggles or face shields
provide additional protection
and should be worn over normal
corrective lenses unless
prescription safety glasses are
worn.

Description of PPEs
6. Masks and
respirators
Masks and respirators
protect the wearer from
inhaling harmful dusts,
fumes, vapours, or
gases.

10

Description of PPEs
Respirators serve to protect the

user from breathing in

contaminants in the air, thus
preserving the health of one's
respiratory tract.
There are two main types of
respirators. One type functions by
filtering out chemicals and gases,
or airborne particles, from the air
breathed by the user. A second
type protects users by providing
clean, respirable air from another
source. This type includes airline
respirators and self-contained
breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Description of PPEs
7. Many other
Many other PPEs are there Items used in
depending upon type of work
medical/laboratory settings to
protect from exposure to
being carried out like for Welders,
infectious agents (aprons, lab
Chemists,
Pilots
Swimmers,
coats, goggles, disposable
Soldiers, Climbing ensembles
gloves, shoe covers, etc.)
used by linemen (e.g., belts and
Mostly PPEs are described
climbing hooks)
with respect to body parts or
Personal flotation devices (life
senses which in important
jackets)
during selection but we have
Barrier
creams
(unless
described PPEs (in previous
used solely for weatherdiscussion) that are mostly
related protection)
used in our industry.

PPEs Need Assessment

During the walk-through survey,
observe:
Sources of impact/motion; i.e.,
machinery or processes where any
movement of tools, machine elements
or particles could exist or movement
of personnel that could result in
collision with stationary objects;
Sources of high temperatures that
could result in burns, eye injury or
ignition of protective equipment, etc.;
Types of chemical exposures;
Sources of hazardous atmospheres;

Sources of hazardous

radiation, i.e., welding,

brazing, cutting, furnaces, heat
treating, high intensity lights,
etc.;
Sources of falling objects or
potential for dropping objects;
Sources of sharp objects
which might pierce the feet or
cut hands; like conveyor worm.
Sources of rolling or
pinching objects which could
crush the feet;
Any electrical hazards.
13

Maintenance of PPEs
PPE must be properly

looked after and stored

when not in use, e.g in
a dry, clean cupboard. If
it is reusable it must be
cleaned and kept in
good condition.
Employees must make
proper use of PPE and
report its loss or
destruction or any fault
in it.

Everyone is responsible
In addition to all shift

engineers, OHSE
department is for your
guidance and protection
Your response and
cooperation is required for
implementation of safety
culture.
