When a landmass
lines up with the earthmoon system, the water
around it is at high tide.
Energy calculations..?
Turbine power
Tidal energy converters can have varying
modes of operating and therefore varying
power output. If the power coefficient of
the device " Cp" is known, the equation
below can be used to determine the power
output of the hydrodynamic subsystem of
the machine.
Turbine Power
The energy available from these kinetic systems can be expressed as:
where:
Cp = the turbine power coefficient
P = the power generated (in watts)
p = the density of the water (seawater is 1027 kg/m)
A = the sweep area of the turbine (in m)
Environmental Impact
One of the biggest knocks against wind turbines is that
they can kill birds in flight by sucking them into their
blades.
This isnt a concern for the underwater turbines,
because the blades on the turbines only rotate at 10 to 30
rotations per minute. At this speed, there is no danger to
aquatic life in the area.
The blades simply move to slowly to do anything more
than push a fish out of the way.
Although the generators create no noise audible to
humans, they do create modest noise underwater.
Manufacturers maintain that this is important to help
marine wild-life have an awareness of the presence of the
turbine.
Advantages
No pollution
Renewable resource
More efficient than wind because of the density
of water
Predictable source of energy vs. wind and solar
Does not affect wildlife.
Disadvantages
High initial cost
Conclusions
Tidal power is a renewable, potentially zero
emission (during operation) energy source.
Tides have the advantage of being completely
predictable, unlike solar and wind power.
Different types of Tidal Generators suit different
areas and energy needs.
There are environmental concerns that need to be
addressed when developing this technology
further.
