Software introduction
Software is another name for programs. Programs are the
instructions that tell the computer how to process data
into the form you want.
There are two major kinds of software : application
software and systems software
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
described as end-user software.
designed to meet a users specific needs
SYSTEMS SOFTWARE
enables the application software to interact with the
computer
is background software
includes programs that can help the computer
manage its own resources and run basic operations

GROUPWARE , also known as collaborative technology, supports

group activities over networks to increase team productivity. Tools
include scheduling and holding meetings, communicating,
collaborating ideas, and sharing documents, knowledge and
information. This is the one of the fastest growing and most
widely used network applications.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE allows you to plan projects,

schedule people and control resources. Two of the most important
tools are the Gantt Charts and the PERT Charts.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING this program allows you to mix text and
graphics to create publications of professional quality.

of media into one form of presentation. These media may include

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) attempts to simulate human
thought processes and actions. Three areas are robotics,
knowledge-based and expert systems, and virtual reality.
ROBOTICS is the field of study concerned with developing
and using robots. ROBOTS are computer-controlled
machines that mimic the motor activities of humans.

KNOWLEDGE-BASED (EXPERT) SYSTEMS computer programs
that provide advice to decision makers who would
otherwise rely on human experts.
VIRTUAL REALITY simulated experience sometimes known
as artificial reality or virtual environments.
Virtual reality hardware includes headgear and gloves.
The headgear (one type is called Eyephones) has earphones
and three dimensional stereoscopic screens. The gloves
(DataGlove) have sensors that collect data about your hand
movements. Coupled with software (such as a program
called Body Electric), this interactive sensory equipment
lets you immerse yourself into a computer generated
world.

SYSTEMS SOFTWARE
SYSTEMS SOFTWARE consists of the bootstrap loader,
diagnostic routines, basic input-output system,
and operating system.
It is the background software that acts as an
interface between the microcomputer and the
user. It also acts as an interface between the
application program and the input, output and
processing devices.
