What is Managerial Grid?

This is a model by Robert Blake & Jane Mouton and


is a behavioral leadership model.
This concerns for the production and the people on a
1 to 9 scale.
product on the horizontal axis [x-axis].
People on the vertical axis [y-axis].
This is used to analysis and coach managers on their
relationship skills.

What are the different leadership styles found
here?

This concept distinguish 5 different leadership styles,


based on the concern for the people and even for the
production:
1)Impoverished style [1,1].
2)Country club style [1,9].
3)Authority-compliance style [9,1].
4)Middle of the road style [5,5].
5)Team style [9,9].

1) Impoverished style [1,1].

This is a lazy approach of management style.


Managers do not show any kind of concern to their
employees neither to the production.
Managers avoids to get into trouble and their main
concern is not to be held responsible for any
mistakes.
As a result of this approach, there will be
disorganization, dissatisfaction, & disharmony due
to lack of effective management.

2) Country club style [1,9]

This is one side approach. There is more attention to


the employee needs than to focus on the production.
Managers have high concern to the employee and
lower concern to the production.
They pay attention to their security & comfort of the
employee hoping to increase performance. As
result, friendly atmosphere created but not
necesscerily very productive.

3) Authority-compliance style [9,1]

This is the opposite of the previous style. Here


production gets a lot of attention & usually
managers use autocratic leadership style.
High concern for production and less to employee
concern in which the manager thinks that
employees needs are unimportant.
Pressures employees though rules and punishment,
and so high output produced, high labor turnover.

4) Middle of the road style [5,5]

Managers try to balance between the competing goals


of the company and the needs of the workers needs.
Managers try to show concern for both employee and
production.
Managers hope for good performance.
Managers believes this is the most anyone can do.

5) Team style [9,9]

This is the ultimate methods out of them all. Where


by management shows huge concern for both
workers and the production.
Manager encourages teamwork and commitment
among employee and make them feel the are a
member of the company’s family.
make employee understand the organizational
purpose and determine the production methods.
Team environment is created based on trust and
respect which leads to high satisfaction .
