Introduction
In

petroleum industry completed wellbores

experiences severe conditions that threaten the
integrity of the wellbore:
eccentric casing; large changes in wellbore pressure;
large changes in wellbore temperature and so on.
These conditions often intensify near wellbore stress
states, which, in turn, influence wellbore stability, sand
production, zonal isolation, and hydraulic fracturing.
Most oil companies spend significant amount of
money to prevent the loss of wellbore integrity.

Objective
For

analyze the stress distribution around the

cased wellbore
to assess the condition of cement failure
to predicting the sand production
to amend erroneous models
to apply the developed models to explain near
wellbore phenomena such as cement failure and
sand production.

Stresses on concentric &

eccentric cased wellbore

Cement failure
The specific objectives of applying the developed models for
cement failure are

To investigate the influence of several factors on tensile and

shear cement failure such as Young's modulus of cement, wellbore
azimuth, wellbore inclination, wellbore temperature, wellbore
pressure, in situ stresses ratio, tectonic stresses variation ratio
and eccentricity of cement.
To determine the most significant factors which can affect tensile
and shear cement failure based on the investigation.
To provide a guide to select proper models for cement failure.

types of cement failure

1. Tensile failure of cement
2. Shear failure of cement
For a cement, tensile failure occurs when a
stress on the cement exceeds the tensile
strength of the cement. Similarly, shear
failure happens when a stress surpasses
the shear strength of the cement

Sand production
Accurate sand production prediction is an
essential issue for oil industries to maintain
good production performance. Although
several factors influence sand production, the
most dominant factor is mechanical. In
addition, the use of inclined wellbores with
more complex mechanical behavior is
increasing. Thus, predicting sand production
properly becomes more significant

Developing models
models for the stress distribution
around an inclined cased wellbore by
considering all wellbore processes and
to amend erroneous models of most
previous work.
1. Analytical method
2. Numerical method

Analytical method
ABAQUS is used for numerical models
with the \model change option to
simulate and combine all individual
wellbore processes while the MATLAB is
used for analytical models.

Numerical model
Numerically developed models are used
to explain near wellbore phenomena such
as stresses on casing, cement failure
and sand production. ABAQUS is used
for developing the numerical models.

conclusion
Although these analytical and numerical models give
beneficial and helpful results and conclusions to understand
mechanical behavior of concentric and eccentric casing,
cement, and rock formation, these models are based on
elastic approaches.
However, real casing, cement and rock behave elastically
and plastically. That is, they are non-linear materials. Thus,
further studies considering the plasticity of materials are
needed. Also, the behavior of some materials depends on a
time history: visco-elastic or visco-plastic materials. This
time-dependent behavior should be considered, too.
