BACKGROUND
Sargassum sp. is one of fisheries comodities which is easy to obtained and
cultivated.
Sargassum sp. contains substances or active compounds such as tannins, iodine
and phenol can be used as antimicrobial agents against several types of
pathogenic bacteria (Bachtiar et al., 2012).
One of pathogenic bacteria is Aeromonas hydrophila

Treatment for Aeromonas hydrophila is still using antibiotics

Treatment using natural ingredients which is not harmful to the environment

and consumers is required

One of those treatment is the utilization of Sargassum sp.

PROBLEMS
Is the Sargassum sp extract. can inhibit the growth of Aeromonas
hydrophila bacteria ?
What is the best concentration of Sargassum sp. extract which can
inhibit the growth of Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria at its optimum?
PURPOSES
The aims of this study is to determine the inhibitory and the best
concentration of the Sargassum sp. extract on the growth of
Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria.

LITERATURE
Brown algae (Sargassum sp.) is a group of algae that is generally brown.
Classification of Sargassum sp. according to Atmaja (1996) is as follows:

Kingdom
: Plantae
Division : Phaeophyta
Class
: Phaeophyceae
Order
: Fucales
Family : Sargassaceae
Genus : Sargassum
Species : Sargassum sp.

Sargassum sp. contains substances or active compounds such as tannins,

iodine and phenol can be used as antimicrobial agents against several types of
pathogenic bacteria (Bachtiar et al., 2012).

LITERATURE
According to Hanzen et al., (1987), classification of Aeromonas hydrophila
bacteria are:

Phylum
Class
Ordo
Family
Genus
Spesies

: Protophita
: Schizomycetes
: Pseudomonadaceae
: Aeromonadaceae
: Aeromonas
: Aeromonas hydrophila

These bacteria include facultative anaerobic bacteria, the bacteria are able to live
with or without oxygen, and are found on the gills, skin, liver and kidneys.

METHODOLOGY

Place and Time

This study was conducted at the Laboratory of
Education at Faculty of Fisheries and Marine
Airlangga University and at Fish Quarantine
Class I Tanjung Perak Surabaya in November
2015
Research Methods
Data were obtained based on the
measurement of the area barrierss diameter
were analyzed descriptively.
Descriptive analysis was conducted to
describe the size of the diameter of inhibitory
zone formed, then compared with a
tetracycline antibiotic inhibitory zone

CONCLUSION

Based on the research that has been done, it can

be concluded that the extract of Sargassum sp. can
inhibit A. hydrophila bacteria growth. The best
concentration of extract Sargassum sp. which can
inhibit the A. hydrophila optimally is 100%
concentration with inhibition zone diameter of 19
mm (very sensitive).
