Department of Mechanical

Engineering
B. Tech. in Mechanical
Engineering
Course Outline

The Process

22 weeks in a semester
8 semesters
1 & 2 Semesters common for all branches
3 to 8 Semesters branch specific
Courses that you study:Theory
Laboratory
Electives
Special Topics
Mini Project
Major Project

To secure 176 credits to get a B. Tech degree

Credit loosely may be referred to as number of
hours per week

The Process
Electives:In 5th 6th 7th semesters: 2 electives in each
semester for a total of 6
Concept of specialization: 1 elective option in
each domain
Automotive Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Manufacturing Science
Thermo-Fluids Engineering
Machine Design

to choose at least 4 electives from a single

domain for a B.Tech degree with a specialization
in that domain
Eg., B. Tech in Mechanical Engg with a specialization in
Automotive Engg

The Process
Concept of Minor:Option of securing a B. Tech degree in one branch
with a minor in another branch
To secure an additional 16 credits, i.e., pass
another 4 theory subjects, in another branch

Concept of Vertical Mobility and Prerequisites

How are you assessed?

The Assessment has 2 components:
In Semester Assessment (ISA): 40 % weightage
End Semester Assessment (ESA): 60 % weightage

For example, theory courses are valued for 100 marks and would
have : ISA: 40 marks
ESA: 60marks

ISA: 40 marks, evaluated as follows:

Computer Based Test 1 (CBT1) for 40 marks, reduced to 15 marks
Computer Based Test 2 (CBT2) for 40 marks, reduced to 15 marks
Assignment - 5 marks
Attendance - 5 marks (75 % a must in each course)

ESA: Written Examination for 100 marks, reduced to 60 marks

5 questions of 20 marks each
1 question in each of 5 units
No choice
Double valuation of each script and if the difference between the two
valuations is more than 9 marks then third valuation.
Students allowed to review / photocopy provided / challenge valuation option
