Project Proposal

Design how a 110 v washing

machine can be operated at a
220 v source.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The study focuses on how to operate a washing machine

voltage rated at 110v AC to 220v AC outlet. The main
issue/problem of our study is we need to design our own
circuit or prototype to generate a 110V AC to 220v AC. From
the past courses we had such as ELECTRONICS 1 and
ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS 1&2, we learned how to convert an AC
to DC by using & creating our own power supply. In a power
supply, there is a transformer that can convert 220v AC to the
smallest AC such as 9v, 15v, etc. On our research, the
transformer has two common types, the "step-up
transformer" and the "step down transformer". The step-down
transformer is what we will be using on our project design
because the step-down converts a high-voltage and a low
voltage, low-current and a high current power. But by doing it
means that we did not create or design our own circuit. We
first decided to create a new transformer by winding it but
due to financial problems, we decided to simulate and explain
the operation of a step down transformer process on how to
convert 220v to 110v AC rated motor.

Statement of the Problem:

How a step-down transformer operates with a

frequency ranging from 50 ~ 60 Hertz.
How a 110v washing machine can be operated at
220v supply using a transformer.
We have to come up with a design that can make
this study possible.

Methodology
Strategy of how to perform the
design project

We should first consider the

operation of a transformer, specifically
its step down operation. Then we
connect it to a 110v washing machine
for analysis. The following parameters
are to be considered

Turns ratio of 10:1 yields 10:1 primary: secondary voltage ratio and 1:10
primary: secondary current ratio.
Create and investigate a 110v schematic diagram of washing machine and
simulate using LiveWire, Multisim, etc.

Design project focuses on the full functionality of a transformer, and or other

means of converting 220v to 110v.

Electrical Circuit
Diagrams
What is a step down transformer: is one whose secondary voltage is less

than its primary voltage. It is designed to reduce the voltage from the
primary winding to the secondary winding. This kind of transformer steps
down the voltage applied to it.
As a step-down unit, the transformer converts high-voltage, low-current
power into low-voltage, high-current power. The larger-gauge wire used in
the secondary winding is necessary due to the increase in current. The
primary winding, which doesnt have to conduct as much current, may be
made of smaller-gauge wire

Continuation ..
It is possible to operate either of these

transformer types backwards (powering the

secondary winding with an AC source and
letting the primary winding power a load) to
perform the opposite function: a step-up can
function as a step-down and visa-versa. One
convention used in the electric power industry
is the use of H designations for the highervoltage winding (the primary winding in a
step-down unit; the secondary winding in a
step-up) and X designations for the lowervoltage winding.
