Objective of the
Presentation
The objective of this
presentation is to create
awareness about the
contribution of women in our
struggle for freedom. We have
experienced that this topic is
not talked about much even
though it holds significance in
the history of India.

Begum Hazrat Mahal


She rebelled against the British East India
Company during the Indian Rebellion of
1857.
Took charge of the affairs in the state of
Awadh and seized control of Lucknow,
declaring her son, Birjis Qadra, as the ruler
(Wali) of Oudh but was forced to retreat
later. She declared
Joined the Maulavi of Faizabad in the
attack on Shahjahanpur.
She drew everyones attention towards the
demolition of temples and mosques by the
British to make way for the construction of
roads.

Annie Besant
Launched the All India Home Rule
League along with Lokmanya Tilak in 1916.
In June 1917 Besant was arrested and
interned at a hill station, where she defiantly
flew a red and green flag.
Took over as president of the Indian
National Congress in December 1917, for a
year.
Campaigned for India's independence, not
only in India but also on speaking tours of
Britain.
Produced a torrent of letters and articles
demanding independence.

Madam Bhikaiji Cama


Together with Singh Rewabhai Rana and
Munchershah Burjorji Godrej, she co-founded
the Paris Indian Society in 1905.
Together with Naoroji and Singh Rewabhai
Rana, Cama supported the founding of
Varma's Indian Home Rule Society in
February 1905.
On 22nd august 1907, she unfurled the Flag
of Indian Independence in Stuttgurt, Germany
while attending the International Socialist
Conference, where she made people aware of
the aftermath of the famine that had hit the
Indian Subcontinent and raised her voice for
the human rights and equality in India.

Sarojini Naidu
Joined politics during the wake of Partition of
Bengal in 1905.
Travelled to various places in India and
delivered lectures on social welfare, making
women aware of the freedom struggle and
invoking them to participate.
Helped to launch Womens Indian Association
in 1917.
First woman to become the governor of any
Indian state (United Provinces of Agra and
Oudh).
First Indian woman to become the president
of Indian National Congress.

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit


Known for her political and diplomatic
role during the freedom struggle.
First Indian woman to hold a cabinet post
as minister of local self-government and
public health.
In 1937, she was elected to the provincial
legislature of the United Provinces
First woman president of United Nations
General Assembly.
In 1946, she was elected to
the Constituent Assembly from the United
Provinces.

Durga Bai Deshmukh


An Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, social
worker and politician.
A prominent social reformer who
participated in Gandhi-led Satyagraha
activities and got imprisoned three times.
Member of the Constituent Assembly of
India.
Founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha (Andhra
Women's Conference) in 1937.
Launched a Central Social Welfare Board to
improve condition of education, women,
children, handicap and rehabilitation of needy
persons.

Sucheta Kripalani
She was a freedom fighter and worked
closely with Mahatma Gandhi during
Partition riots in India.
She also played major role in politics by
joining Indian National Congress. During
the formation of constitution of India she
was elected as a member of the drafting
committee of Constituent assembly.
Another feather to her cap is attached when
she sang Vande Mataram in the
Constituent Assembly.
She was also elected as the chief minister of
Uttar Pradesh state after independence.

First incarceration was for the Civil


Disobedience campaigns,sent to Sabarmati
prison.

Took up the Harijan (Untouchable) cause after


bail. On December 1932, she represented her
husband at the opening of an antiUntouchability Conference in Madras.
A backlash was in full swing amongst orthodox
Hindus, and Kasturbas espousal of the Harijan
cause was criticised bitterly.

In 1939 became involved in a womens


protest against the arbitrary rule by local
princes.

Imprisoned during Quit India Movement for


addressing a mass meeting at Shivaji Park.

Usha Mehta Savitribai Phule


A very great contribution to her
credit is the origination of
Congress Radio also known as
Secret Congress Radio, which was
an underground radio station
which was active for few months
during the Quit India Movement
of 1983.
Due to this clandestine activity
she was imprisoned in Yeravda
Jail of Pune.
She was also a follower of
Mahatma Gandhi.
