MOVING TO MEXICO

Barton Textile
Annual Meeting

PROBLEM

Self interest
employ a drastic move in order to gain

profit, to attain its market position and and

ensure sustainability of the business.

FRAMEWORK TO ETHICAL
ANALYSIS

CORPORATE GOALS Will it

be profitable?

The company has been profitable, though

competition in the textile industry was
very high and margins were very tight.
In terms of Market Forces, the company
was able to reach its projected production
by employing people at marginable wages.
In terms of Social Responsibility, the
company was able to hire more workers
and contribute economic development to
the community.

GOVERNMENT
RESPONSIBILITY- Is it Legal?

The company has legally complied with

prescribed local government
regulations.
Under the Federal Law, the Worker

Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act

(WARN) requires larger employers to give
workers 60 days notice before a plant
closing or mass lay-off.

Public Opinion- Social

Values Is it Fair?

It is fair because they observed their

right to privacy and respected the right
of the employees to the truth. Though
delayed it was still informed.

Personal Beliefs &

Responsibility is it right?

The company has the right to privacy.

However, employees has the right to
the truth. A right to be told the truth
and to be informed about matters that
significantly affect employees
choices.These rights do not mention
when it is right to disclose, with this we
can say it was right.

The Global Issue Governmental

Responsibility & Values Will we survive?

The company will survive as long as

there are workers to be employed and
a market to meet.
There is no protest that happened, it
can be assumed that the company
provided proper separation benefits.

The employee believes a better security

of the company. However, any incoming
events were not anticipated.

The company believes by hiring more

workers at low- paying wages with a
maximum output for its market gain a
better profit. However, if any
circumstances may arise, an alternative
measure must be observed.

QUESTIONS

Did the noble end- significantly

higher profits- justify the
ignoble means- leaving the
town high and dry?

No. Significantly higher profit cannot

justify the end of leaving a town high
and dry, but the survival of the
company does.

Were the owners ethically

responsible?

Moving a company is not easy, the

owners had to really look into the pros
and cons of a decision like this. Yes,
they were ethically responsible
because they weighed this decision
out.

Did the company owe the

town anything? If so, what?

No. This is due to the companys right

to what is agreed. We can assume that
there is no contract or agreement that
the company is responsible for the
economy of the town.

Should the owners have given the town a

longer lead time, or at least let the
employees know they were thinking about
it? How early? Should they have given the
town another month? More time?
The company followed the law under the

Federal Law, the Worker Adjustment and

Retraining Notification Act
(WARN) requires larger employers to give
workers 60 days notice before a plant
closing or mass lay-off.

Was management ethical to keep the move

secret at all? Was it ethical to move the
factory?

Yes, the company was ethical in the process of their moving

and the move itself. This is because moving the company
will not only provide higher profits but also take the edge
that other manufacturers have. This can also ensure the
companys sustainability.
The company only delayed the announcement of their
move to keep employee morale high. Because if the
employees had low morale, they may not be able to
perform well and may even cause them not to recieve their
proper compensation.
The company also abided by the federal law, wherein 60
days is the allotted time for an announcement of a factory
closure or major lay-off.
