Application of Differential
Evolution to determine the
HEPWM angles of a three
phase voltage source
inverter

This paper presents an efficient Differential Evolution (DE)

based solution for harmonic elimination pulse-width
modulation (HEPWM). The aim is to solve for the set of
transcendental equations that determine the switching
angles of the HEPWM waveform. The objective function of
the DE is designed to minimize (to near zero) the selected
harmonics and at the same time allows for the
fundamental component of the output voltage to be
controlled independently

The paper describes an algorithm for calculating the

near optimal switching angles, which will permit a fast
and efficient realization in a microprocessor based
controller. With this type of PWM scheme, it is possible to
show analytically that components at the signaling
frequencies are not generated in the DC supply input
current, for existing power frequency track circuits

METHODOLOGY
STEP 1:
Design of 3-phase 5 level MLI

STEP 2:
SELECTION OF PROPER OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM
DETERMINISTIC
ALGORITHMS

STOCHASTIC

Uses concrete mathematical proofs

Optimization depends on starting
points
Most of them use gradient approach
Fails for multi-modal functions
Convergence is fast

ALGORITHMS

Probability based approach

Independent of starting points
Utilizes metaheuristic math
Works for uni-modal and multi-modal
Convergence is slow

HYBRID ALGORITHMS

Combines both deterministic and stochastic algorithms

Stochastic part determines the starting point
Deterministic part converged onto the optimum point within search space
