What forms of audience feedback

did I use?
Online questionnaire created through
Survey Monkey. (results collected through
school Fronter system, Facebook, email)
Paper questionnaire distributed around
the school.
Peer advice in the editing stages (from
Media class)
Early draft screening
Final draft screening

Questionnaire introduction
The questionnaire was the initial stage of my research
and planning. I decided to create a questionnaire and
send it out to all the Sixth Form students. I did this
through using the Fronter system. When I had
created a questionnaire for G321- Magazine research,
it felt like some of the questions had not been useful
for the final construction so I thought about the
purpose of the questionnaire- to shape the final
outcome- the final production. I wanted to know about
genre expectations, why they watched music videos,
how they felt about stars, how they knew about
album releases and where to get them ( ancillary
task) and how they felt about the way women were
presented in music videos.

In order to understand my target audience, I researched

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. I realised through reading the
results of the questionnaire that people wanted to be
entertained and the psychological need to feel sel-esteem and
the respect of others was something that the audience wanted
to see in music videos. This was evident in their response to
questions about women are represented in music videos

I researched the Uses and Gratification theory

and realised that the target audience for my
music video was active and not passive. Because
of media convergence, they could watch the
video on their laptops, phones, tablets, tv etc.
My audience questionnaire feedback told me
that most of those questioned watched music
videos on their computers rather than on their
tvs. This made me consider the nature of the
audience that was doing the questionnaire. I
gave a copy of the questionnaire to some
teachers and some adult relations and they said
they watched music videos on their computers
but just to listen rather than watch. They said
they sometimes caught music videos when they
were in pubs or shops when they were on
screens. This made me consider the need to
make something that was going to have a strong
narrative- to keep people involved in the story
and continue watching the video

The screening!
Cake and biscuits
were the bribes used
to persuade people to
give up their time to
do some audience
research. Many
biscuits were eaten in
the name of media

I gave out letter style leaflets inviting

students (year 11,12,13- age range of 1618 and a mixture of male/female)
I did not tell them what I would be asking
them to comment on before watching the
video. I just wanted initial responseswhat was good/ what didnt work.
I had a very good turn out ( helped by the
rain outside and the promise of food!)
I was pleased with the feedback.
I gave people plain paper to write their
thoughts onto in case some people did
not want to verbalise the negative
aspects of the video.
Most people were happy to discuss
openly their thoughts and feelings about
the video.
At this point I did not have completed
ancillary task but I had some still images
that I intended to use.

How the first screening

informed my production:
The verbal feedback from
the screening involved
positive comments: good
acting from the narratives
protagonist, good costumes
and props ( mise en scene),
interesting story line.
The negatives were that the
story line was a bit unclear

So

So
I added more film of the
narrative. I used a filter to make it
black and white to show
flashbacks and positive/ happy
times ( this technique is a
convention often used in music
videos and films to help make the
narrative clearer)
This made the narrative easy to
follow.
I was pleased with the reaction to
the acting as this would help my
representation of the star
persona

Sepia toned
to make the
time frame
of the
narrative
more easy
to follow
based on
audience
feedback

Based on
audience
feedback: The
full colour
sections of the
video show
when it is the
sections of the
narrative that
are current. It
separates it
from the
flashback
sections

Based on the research from the initial

questionnaire, I had wanted a strong female
protagonist. I thought this would be hard
because the lyrics are about a woman who is
hurt and emotionally damaged and I didnt
want her to look like a victim.
However, the audience feedback from the
first screening said that she seemed strong
anyway. Some comments were that the
performance sections showed the strength of
her feelings but she seemed like she wasnt
weak. This was because of the acting and the
direction given!
Also the audience liked the contrast of the
happy sections to show the different
characteristics of the protagonist.

The final screening

I used the same letter for the final screening (but changed the datesobviously!)
This time I had copies of the ancillary task for people to look at and the
final edition of the music video. This had the added sepia effect for
flashbacks, some improved lip syncing and slightly less performance
sections- all based on feedback from the last screening and feedback from
peers in a media class screening of our work.
The feedback from the final screening was very positive. They loved the
star persona created by the protagonist in the video and they thought this
was present in the digipak and website. They felt she was a Beyonce
style artist as she had an aura of glamour and strength. The female
viewers felt that it was a positive representation of women, even though I
had been worried about making her look too much like a victim.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:
This was very informative in the production of my main task. It made me
more conscious about what the audience would want. It made me think
about how I am appealing to the needs of the audience.
It also made me think about the responsibility of representing gender in a
certain way. I wanted to go against the narrative idea of binary
oppositions. I didnt want weak v strong. I wanted an empowered
representation. It mage me aware of narrative weakness so I used the
feedback to make it clearer.
The feedback about the ancillary task linking to the main task further
emphasised the need for star persona. This made me pleased that I had
researched Richard Dyer!
