STESEN JAMBATAN TIMBANG SRI GADING

1.0 INTRODUCTION
-

A flood occurs when water overflows the land that's normally dry. This can happen in a
multitude of ways. Most common is when rivers or streams overflow their banks.

Moving water has awesome damaging power.

Bridges, houses, trees, and cars can be picked up and carried off

The erosive force of moving water can drag dirt from under a building's foundation, causing it
to crack and tumble.

Changes in rainfall patterns and rises in sea levels resulting from climate change may make
such flooding incidents more frequent and severe in the future.

we cannot prevent the climatic causes of flooding, we can take measures to prepare for it and
reduce the resulting damage

2.0 CASE OF STUDY

For this project we decide to choose
Stesen Jambatan Timbang, Sri Gading
as our study area. Stesen Jambatan
Timbang, Sri Gading is near main route
to Ayer Hitam and near palm oil
plantation. Because of it lower level
than main road near it, flood always
occur especially during raining season.

1. Protect life and property.

2. Promote public awareness.

the parties involved

4.

Inform the public on the risk exposure to natural hazards and ways to
increase the publics capability to prepare, respond, recover and
mitigate the impacts of these events.

5.0 JUSTIFICATION
1.

Concerned with to the problem of flooding

2.

Understand in detail the existing planning system

3.

Understanding the role of the parties involved

.0PROBLEM STATEMENT
Urbanization is a process which is inseparable with the development of a country. It is also a catalyst for the
development and process that leads to positive change in society towards modernization of the industrial countries.
However, if development is unplanned and controlled, it can bring negative impact to the environment and society in
general. Among the negative effects of the squatter problem, traffic congestion, environmental pollution and
increased risk of flooding danger.

SITE VISITS
On 18 March 2016, we had went to

DRAINAGE SYSTEM
THE CONTINOUS OF
HEAVY RAINFALL

8.0 FACTORS
LOW-LYING AREA
AND TYPES OF SOIL
IMPERVIOUS AREA

WASTE LITTERING

1) THE CONTINOUS OF HEAVY RAINFALL

The rain continued without stopping would cause flooding. In low-lying areas, rain water will flow into the drainage.
Drainage filled with water will spill out, causing low-lying areas flooded.
2) DRAINAGE SYSTEM
The drainage system is not planned well. Floods that often hit the place due to lack of drainage system is built and it's
too small and shallow. The amount of water causes the water to spill out of the ditch caused a flash flood. The drain
that supposed to channel the water is also not maintained by the authorities.
3) LOW-LYING AREA AND TYPES OF SOIL
Our study area is considered as low-lying area as the level is lower that the roadside. This is one of the reason that
causing flood to occur. Furthermore, our study area is located near the palm tree plantations. The type of soil is Marine
Clay which has a high potential to swell upon wetting and shrink upon drying. It consists of clayey and silty soils that
have poor drainage properties, low bearing strength and can cause slope instability/landslides.

4) IMPERVIOUS AREA
The natural surface has been converted to impervious surfaces such as cement, tar, concrete and so on. As rain water
can not be absorbed as it should, the water will take time to flow into the drainage system. Then, in a short while the
volume of water that flows rapidly will cause a drainage system full. The drainage system can not cope with the
volume of water and cause water to spill out. This can cause flash flood to happen even when the rain fall in a short
time.
5) WASTE LITTERING
The cause that can be attributed other than the four existing factors is waste littering by people who are not
responsible. Although this is not a major cause, but we found out that this factor is also contribute to the problem of
flooding in our study area. Through our observations, the waste in our study area is at a low level and is not
satisfactory. We can see the waste that should not be there. It looks like the trenches and ditches which are laden with
debris could interfere the water flow and current observations made we found that the water is difficult to flow
smoothly because of restrictions or objects (debris) that prevents the flow of water

9.0 SOLUTION
1. Improve irrigation and
drainage systems.

The drain along Stesen Jambatan Timbang

2. Privatization projects for

drainage and irrigation system
maintenance.

3.

Dispose of waste in the right place.

There are a lot of rubbish being dumped into

a ditch close Stesen Jambatan Timbang

4.

Maintain oil palm plantations.

The Oil Palm along the Stesen Jambatan

Timbang.

10.0 CONCLUSION
Soil and rock type can influence what happens to precipitation when it reaches the
ground. Impermeable soils and rocks such as clay or shale do not allow water to
infiltrate, this forces water to run off. Thus, because of this problem we try to come out
with recommendation that can avoid Stesen Jambatan Timbang Sri Gading frequently
flooding or will not flood again when the occurrence of rain. Through this study we
learn more clearly about the planning process and provided recommendations to
improve the effectiveness of flood control at Stesen Jambatan Timbang Sri Gading.
