What is

FEAR??
"The only thing we have to fear is fear
itself - nameless, unreasoning ,
unjustified."

qFear is an emotional response to a perceived


threat.
qIt is a basic survival mechanism occurring in
response to a specific stimulus, such as pain
or the threat of danger.
qFear is a reaction which, sometimes, becomes
enjoyable due to the thrill element involved
with it.

HOW FEAR WORKS??
The Fear Processor …
• Thalamus - decides
where to send
incoming sensory data
(from eyes, ears,
mouth, skin)
• Sensory cortex -
interprets sensory
data
• Hippocampus - stores
and retrieves
conscious memories;
processes sets of
stimuli to establish
context
• Amygdala - decodes
What are the causes of
fear??
Worry , Anxiety ,
Nervousness ….
 Fear should be
distinguished from the
state of anxiety , which
typically occurs
without any external
threat .
 Worry is another form of
fear .
 While nervousness can be
PHOBIA … A kind of
fear
Ø A phobia is an intense and persistent fear that is
not based on any rational sense.
Ø It prevents participation in activities that might
arouse it.

TYPES:

Agoraphobia: fear of places.


Social phobia: fear of encounters with other people


Specific phobias: fear of a particular thing or situation,
such as snakes, public speaking, heights or the sight of
blood.

 Altophobia – fear of heights.
 Decidophobia – fear of making
decisions.
 Hydrophobia – fear of water (a symptom
of rabies).
 Gerascophobia – fear of growing old or
ageing.
 Glossophobia – fear of speaking in

 Tetraphobia – fear of the number 4.

 Ablutophobia – fear of bathing, washing, or
cleaning.

 Coitophobia – fear of sexual intercourse.

 Phobophobia – fear of having a phobia.

 Somniphobia – fear of sleep.

External fears …

 An external fear is something


outside of you that causes you
some degree of pain or
discomfort.
 An example of this type of fear
could include a fear of flying
or a fear of spider

 It is usually caused
by some negative
experience you had
in the past, which
subsequently lead
you to link a
negative emotion to
it
Internal fears …

 An internal fear is something


outside of you that triggers
an internal response,
whereby you question your
ability to do or achieve
something..
 An example of this could
include a fear of asserting
yourself, and generally shown
by lack of self esteem.

 This type of
fear usually
occurs as a
result of
early childhood
and teenage
experiences,
which influence
the highly
impressionable
and developing
young mind.
Subconscious fears …

 It involve limiting
subconscious beliefs that
cause you to sabotage yourself
when you are achieving more
than you subconsciously
believe you worthy of
achieving.
 An example of subconscious fear
could include a fear of
success.

formed during
your early
childhood and
teenage years
