FXS and FXO

FXS - Foreign eXchange Subscriber interface (the plug on the wall) delivers POTS service from the local phone
companys Central Office (CO) and must be connected to subscriber equipment (telephones, modems, and fax machines). In
other words an FXS interface points to the subscriber. An FXS interface provides the following primary services to a
subscriber device:
Dial Tone
Battery Current
Ring Voltage
You may also see the FXS acronym rendered as Foreign eXchange System.
FXO - Foreign eXchange Office interface (the plug on the phone) receives POTS service, typically from a Central Office
of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). In other words an FXO interface points to the Telco office. An FXO
interface provides the following primary service to the Telco network device:
on-hook/off-hook indication (loop closure)
Because of the characteristics described above, a telecommunications line from an FXO port must connect to an FXS
port in order for the connection to work. Similarly, a line from an FXS port must connect to an FXO port in order for
the connection to work. When the FXO port on your analog telephone is connected to the FXS port in the wall, you receive
(FXS) service from the telephone company and you hear a dial tone when you pick up the phone.

Who can generate alarms in a radio link system?

1 ) Line Interference
Using the Performance Monitoring ES, UAS, BES, SES, CSS, DM, AS, EFS,BPV,
and BER measuring
-2 ) Hardware faulty
- Alarms due of a wrong configurations
- Faulty (using BER TEST function as a E1 generator and Loops, to check the cables
interruptions and measure BER into different modules)
3 ) External Event
- No constant 48 Volt Power supply during the day/night (FAMxc 5RU max 110Watt,
FAMxc 2.5RU max 45 Watt)
- Humidity 0-95% RH (non-condensing).
- Temperature range 0 to +50 C;

87

Maintenance
Maintenance Consists of two stages:
1) Periodical checks = detect correct radio performance without
the presence of no alarm.
Every 3 months or 6 months or 1 year for each equipment,
perform the following operations :
Save Backup of equipment
Evaluate site condition (dust, opened windows,
ventilation,etc.. )
2) Corrective maintenace = takes place as soon as one or more
alarms conditions are present.

88

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting is performed with :
Reading Current Alarms and trying to figure out which part of the equipment
is affected, in the following pages there is a description of alarms.
Disable Loops Active
Verifying E1 streams with PRBS inserted into one equipment and received
on others equipment and check BER Measure.
Verifying the correct initialization of the FAMxc
