BUILDING SPIRITUAL

STRENGTH
Lesson 4

STRENGTH
OVER TEMPTATION
AND
SIN

WE MUST ALWAYS LEARN

FROM THE MISTAKES OF

OTHERS
Nevertheless, with most of
them God was not pleased,
for they were overthrown in the
wilderness.
(I Corinthians 10:5)
(Continued)

Now these things took

place as examples for us,
that we might not

desire evil as they

did.
(I Corinthians 10:6)

DAVID WAS A MAN

AFTER_______________
OWN HEART
he raised up David to be their
king, of whom he testified and
said, 'I have found in David the
son of Jesse a man after my
heart, who will do all my will.'
(Acts 13:22)
BUT, DAVID SINNED!

DAVIDS SIN WITH BATHSHEBA

AND THE DEATH OF URIAH
Nathan said to David, "You are
the man! Thus says the LORD,
the God of Israel, 'I anointed you
king over Israel, and I delivered
you out of the hand of Saul.
(II Samuel 12:7)

And I gave you your

master's house and your
master's wives into your
arms and gave you the
house of Israel and of
Judah. And if this were too
little, I would add to you as
much more.
(II Samuel 12:8)

Why have you despised the

word of the LORD, to do what
is evil in his sight? You have
struck down Uriah the Hittite
with the sword and have
taken his wife to be your wife
and have killed him with the
sword of the Ammonites.
(II Samuel 12:9)

NOTE:

DAVIDS SIN CAME OUT OF

HIS OWN

SELFISHNESS!

DAVID CONFESSED HIS SIN

AND GOD FORGAVE HIM
David said to Nathan, "I

have
sinned against the LORD."
And Nathan said to David, "The
LORD also has put away
your sin; you shall not die.
(II Samuel 12:13)

CONSEQUENCES OF DAVIDS
SIN:
1. Shame!
2. Child born of this sin would die
(II Samuel 12:14)
3. The sword would not depart
from Davids house (12:10)
4. Davids wives would be taken
away (12:11)

But when David saw that his

servants were whispering
together, David understood
that the child was dead. And
David said to his servants, "Is the
child dead?" They said, "He is
dead."
(II Samuel 12:19)

For you will not delight in

sacrifice, or I would give it; you
will not be pleased with a burnt
offering.
The sacrifices of God are a

broken spirit; a broken and

contrite heart, O God, you will
not despise.
(Psalm 51:16, 17)

SPIRITUAL LESSONS WE
LEARN FROM DAVIDS SIN
1. Sin always brings
punishment (child dies, etc)

Woe to the wicked! It shall be

ill with him, for what his hands
have dealt out shall be done
to him.
(Isaiah 3:11)

So is he who goes in to his

neighbor's wife; none who

touches her will go

unpunished.
(Proverbs 6:29)
. As you have done, it shall be
done to you; your deeds shall
return on your own head.
(Obadiah 15)

2. SIN IS SELF-CENTERED
Do

not desire her beauty in

your heart, and do not let her

capture you with her eyelashes;

(Proverbs 6:25)
NOTE:
I Peter 4:3

EXAMINE THE SELFCENTEREDNESS HERE:

For the time that is past
suffices for doing what the
Gentiles want to do, living in

sensuality, passions,
drunkenness, orgies,
drinking parties, and lawless
idolatry.
(I Peter 4:3)

3. SIN IS INGRATITUDE
Nathan said to David, "You are
the man! Thus says the

LORD, the God of Israel, 'I

anointed you king over
Israel, and I delivered you
out of the hand of Saul.
(II Samuel 12:7)

And I gave you your

master's house and your
master's wives into your
arms and gave you the
house of Israel and of
Judah. And if this were too
little, I would add to you as
much more. (II Samuel 12:8)

NOTE THAT

UNTHANKFULNESS IS
LISTED WITH OTHER TERRIBLE
SINS
For although they knew God,
they did not honor him as God or
give thanks to him, but they
became futile in their thinking,
and their foolish hearts were
darkened.
(Romans 1:21)

For people will be lovers of

self, lovers of money,
proud, arrogant, abusive,
disobedient to their parents,
ungrateful, unholy,
(II Timothy 3:2)

WE SHOULD ALWAYS BE

THANKFUL
And let the peace of Christ rule
in your hearts, to which indeed
you were called in one body. And

be thankful.
(Colossians 3:15)

THANKFULNESS IS A
MEASURE OF SPIRITUAL DEPTH
AND STRENGTH

UNTHANKFUL LEPERS
(Luke 17:11-19)

4. EVERYONE IS TEMPTED
JESUS WAS TEMPTED JUST AS
WE ARE TEMPTED
For we do not have a high priest
who is unable to sympathize with
our weaknesses, but one who in

every respect has been

tempted as we are, yet without
sin.
(Hebrews 4:15)

SIN BEGINS IN THE HEART

AND LEADS TO EVIL ACTION
But each person is tempted
when he is lured and enticed by
his own desire.
Then desire when it has
conceived gives birth to sin, and
sin when it is fully grown brings
forth death.
(James 1:14, 15)

"You have heard that it was said,

'You shall not commit adultery.'
But I say to you that everyone
who looks at a woman with lustful
intent has already committed
adultery with her in his heart.
(Matthew 5:27, 28)

Keep your heart with all

vigilance, for from it flow the
springs of life.
(Proverbs 4:23)

5. WE CANNOT

HIDE OUR

SIN
You have set our iniquities
before you, our secret sins in
the light of your presence.
(Psalm 90:8)

For my eyes are on all

their ways. They are not
hidden from me, nor is
their iniquity concealed
from my eyes.
(Jeremiah 16:17)

MAN CANNOT HIDE FROM

GOD!

The eyes of the LORD are in

every place, keeping watch on

the evil and the good.

(Proverbs 15:3)
But if you will not do so, behold,
you have sinned against the
LORD, and be sure your sin will

find you out.

(Numbers 32:23)

And no creature is hidden from

his sight, but all are naked and
exposed to the eyes of him to
whom we must give account.
(Hebrews 4:13)
The sins of some men are
conspicuous, going before them
to judgment, but the sins of
others appear later.
(I Timothy 5:24)

6. THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

LIVE ON AND ON
THE HURT, the

REGRET,
the HEARTACHE, the
SHAME do NOT go away

For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is ever before me.
(Psalm 51:3)

YIELD NOT TO
TEMPTATION,
FOR
YIELDING IS SIN
