Introduction

Training Manual

FLUENT for CATIA has a standard

library of fluid and mixture materials
available for use.
The Apply Material icon can be used
to access the materials library, and
assign materials to flow/solid
volumes.
The library is part of the FLUENT for
CATIA installation and can be
accessed at:
<path>/intel_a/startup/materials/Fluids
and Mixture.CATMaterial (Windows 32)
<path>/win_b64/startup/materials/Flui
ds and Mixture.CATMaterial (Windows
64)
where <path> is the installation
directory.

Solid materials can be applied from

the CATIA materials database.
The user can create and modify
materials as necessary.

Applying Materials

Training Manual

Fluid and mixture materials can be applied from the library in two
ways:
Method 1:
Drag-and-drop the icon material from the material library window on the
appropriate flow (or solid) volume in the graphics window.

Method 2:

Click on Part1_FluentPart under Links.Manager

Select the material icon in the library.
Click on Apply and OK to validate.
A new material entry will appear under Part1_FluentPart

When fluid/solid zones are hanging (completely surrounded by

another fluid or solid zone), the first method cannot be used.

Working with User Materials

Training Manual

For complicated geometries, the dragand-drop method may not work.

In this case, the User Material icon can
be employed to set materials.
To create User Materials:
Click on the User Material icon
Select the material in the library panel
that opens up.
Click Apply Material, then OK to
confirm.
The newly added user-created material
will become available under Materials.1
in the tree, as User Material.1.

Then assign the User Material using the

Flow Property Icon for the
corresponding flow/solid volume.

Assigning Materials to Flow/Solid Zones

Training Manual

To assign materials to flow or solid

volumes, the Flow or Solid Property
icons have to be used.
Each flow or solid volume has a
corresponding Property icon under
Properties.x.

To assign materials:
Double click on the Flow or Solid
property icon.
In the Flow Property Definition
dialog box:
Enable User-defined material
Select the User Material created
earlier.

Porous Media Zones

Training Manual

A separate flow volume should be

created for each porous zone
The Flow Property Icon for the flow
volume corresponding to the porous
zone is used to assign porous media
properties:

Select Yes next to Porous Property.

Click on the
icon to set the definitions
of porous properties such as:
Porosity or Open area
Viscous and inertial resistance
coefficients in three directions.
Percentage Open area

If temperature effects are also included,

thermal material properties need to be
specified for the porous region.

Multiple methods are available for

porous properties.

See the Users Guide (section 12.6.2) for

more details.

Setting Common Material for Multiple Fluid/Solid Zones

Training Manual

Select Multiple fluid or solid

properties using Ctrl or shift keys
and right click
Select Definition in the options to
bring up the Definitions panel.
Click on Set key next to Material.
Set the common material by
clicking on User Material.
User Material should be available in
the tree.

Similarly, you can set other options,

such as:
Laminar Zone
Heat Generation Rate
Expose Coupled walls.

Creating New Materials

Training Manual

Creating new materials:

Start Infrastructure Material Library
to open a new material family window
Right click on the new material icon and
open the Properties dialog box
Click on More button, and 4 new tabs,
including Fluent Characteristics for fluid
properties, are added.
Name the new material in the Feature
Name entry field in the Feature Properties
tab
Set the value of different properties.
Click on Apply, then on OK to finish.
Double click on this material icon to edit
the properties

Setting Temperature-Dependent Properties

Training Manual

FLUENT for CATIA V5 has added

capabilities temperaturedependent material properties
which are useful for:
modeling heat transfer in solids,
where the temperature varies
widely and conductivity or
density is varying.
Natural convection due to
density changes in fluids.

In addition, when the

Boussinesq model is enabled
for natural convection, the
Thermal expansion coefficient
for the fluid can be specified in
Material Properties.
