ABOUT
NTPC Limited is the largest power
generating company of India.
A
public
sector
company,
it
was
incorporated in the year 1975 to accelerate
power development in the country as a
wholly owned company of the Government
of India.
It has an electric power generating capacity
of 41,184 MW.
It is one of the seven Maharatna
companies.

ABOUT
It has
15 coal based (24,395 MW).
7 gas based (3,955 MW).
4 Joint Venture Projects (2,294 MW).
NTPC's share on 31 Mar 2008 in the
total installed capacity of the country
was 19.1% and it contributed 28.50%
of the total power generation of the
country during 2008-09.

AURAIYA GAS POWER PLANT

NTPC Auraiya is located at Dibiyapur
in Auraiya district in the state of Uttar
Pradesh.

AURAIYA GAS POWER PLANT

Major affecting conditions are ambient
temperature, Barometric pressure and
Power Factor at generator terminals.
AuGPP has two combined cycle gas
module each consisting of two gas
turbines, two waste heat recovery
boilers (WHRB) and one steam turbine.
The capacity of each Gas Turbine is
111.76 MW and that of Steam Turbine is
110 MW.
Total capacity of each Module: 326 MW.

The AuGPP can be basically divided into two

sub-plants:

of the following componenets:
1.Gas Turbines
2.Steam Turbines

Module-1

GAS TURBINE
Gas Turbine is a heat
engine.
In the Gas Turbine, the
following processes take
place:
Compression
of working medium (air)
taken from atmosphere in a
compressor.

Combustion
Increase of working medium
temperature by constant
pressure ignition of fuel in
combustion chamber.

APPLICATIONS OF GAS TURBINE

Conventional applications are
Simple cycle operation.
Combined cycle operation.

Electric utility companies use gas

turbine predominantly in simple
cycle
and
combined
cycle
applications.
Combined cycle operation is much
efficient than open cycle operation.

STEAM TURBINE
There are 2 steam turbines in number, present in
the full AuGPP
The two waste heat recovery boilers combined
their output to one turbine.
The turbine gets its feed from the low pressure
(LP) and high pressure (HP) drums.
The low pressure drums give its output directly to
the turbine but the HP drums give its output to
the supper heater and then to the turbine.
In this way, steam turbine consists of two turbines
Low Pressure(LP) and High Pressure(HP)
turbines.
The steam turbine operates on Rankine cycle.

GAS TURBINES VS. STEAM TURBINES

GENERATOR
Generator is three phases, two pole air
cooled machine.
The mechanical energy generated by
turbine is converted to electrical energy by
the generator and appear in the stator
winding in the form of current and voltage.
This balances the torque of the gas turbine.
It lead the magnetic flux, and carries the
field winding, the generator is self excited.
The power required for the excitation is
taken from the generator terminals and fed
to the field winding through the excitation

WASTE HEAT RECOVERY BOILER

AuGPP is also known as Waste Heat Recovery
Boilers (WHRB) plant, which is of non-fired, dual
pressure and forced circulation type. The boiler
has two different water/steam cycle known as
high-pressure system and low-pressure system.
Components of WHRB
The main components of the WHRB can be
divided into following categories:
LP Economizer
LP Drum & Evaporator
LP Super-heater
HP Economizer
HP Drum & Evaporator

SWITCHYARD
It is a medium for exchange of power from
source to load or from one source to
another.
It consists of switching equipment,
measurement, protection and control
equipment required for power generation
and utilization.
Some of the main components of Switchyard
are:

Circuit Breaker(CB)
Isolator
Current Transformer(CT)
Capacitive Voltage Transformer(CVT)
Lightning Arrester(LA)

SWITCHYARD
There are mainly two subsystems for the transmission
of electricity in the
Switchyard:
I. 400 kV System
II.220 kV System

400 kV SYSTEM
Used for
transmission with
Agra and Kanpur.
Contains
2 Main Bus
One and a Half
Breaker Scheme
15 Bays

220 kV SYSTEM
Used for
transmission with
Sikandara SS, UPPC
Pata SS, Phaphund
SS and Malanpur SS.
Contains
2 Main Bus
1 Transfer Bus
24 Bays
