University, the following were involved.

assistant
Colleagues in different departments who disscussed the project
and reviewed sample questionnaire

questionnaires

collecting
Need analysis does not produce an
information overload. There needs
to be a clear reason for collecting
different kind of information so as to
ensure taht only information that
will actually be used is collected.

Example:
A teacher or group of teachers assesing the needs
of new groups of studetns in a language program,
needs analysis procedures may consist of:
Initial questionnaire
follow_-up individual and groups interviews
Meeting with students
Meeting with other teachers
Ongoing classroom observation
test

organizing
The result of a needs analysis will generally
consist of information taken from several
different source and summarizd in the form of
ranked lists of different kinds.

The point here is that there is no direct

application of the information obtained froms
need analysis. Althought the information
gathered is useful, it still has subjeted to a great
deal of interpretation before it can be usefully
applied in program planning.

Example:
It might result in list of the following kind:
Situation on which english is frequently used
Situation in which difficulties are encountered
Comment most often made by people on learners performance
Frequencies with which different transaction are carried out
Perceived difficulties with different aspects of language use
Preference for different kinds of activities in teaching
Frequencies of errors made in defferent types of situations or
activities
Common communication problems in different situation
Suggestions and opinions about different aspects of learners
problems
Frequencies of linguistics items or units in different tests or
situation.

analyzing
The process of analysis (of the result of a
need analysis) involves efforts that are
thouhtful, investigatory, systematic, and
carefully recorded so that they can be
replicated and reviewed.
The primary goal of analysis is to bring
meaning to the obtained information and
to do so in the context of some philosophy,
relevant perspectives and value position
that may be in conflict.

Reporting information
collected
The format for reporting the findings
may also vary. It maight include:

A short summary document
A meeting
A group discussion
A newsletter
