Objective:
The present work provides a step by step approach for
interpretation of accurate assessment of the optical coherence
tomography (OCT) images and Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL)
morphology. The thickness of the RNFL decreased as the pressure
increases that lead to Glaucoma. The RNFL is segmented by
entropy method. The result shows that the RNFL thickness for the
set of normal images ranges from 88.2m to 175m and abnormal
images ranges from 54.34m to 99.35m.

Introduction:
In

many people, the retinal damage is caused by

elevated eye pressure. Many people may even
have an eye pressure within the normal range,
which is in between 10 mmHg to 20 mmHg.
Damages may happen if there is a weakness in the
retinal optic nerve. In maximum cases both
reasons are included, but to a varying extent.

Eye autonomy

The

main cause of glaucoma is the failure of human eye

to maintain a proper balance between the amount of
fluid produced and the amount of fluid drained out.
Increase in eye fluid inside the eye causes damages to
retina that leads to glaucoma.

Optical Coherence tomography

Optical

coherence tomography (OCT) allows the

visualization of the retinal microarchitecture as
cross-sectional or tomographic volumetric data. The
usefulness of OCT in the management of various
retinal diseases is validated by the possibility to
allow early diagnosis and to help in the decisionmaking process.

Optical nerve hypoplasia

Optic nerve hypoplasia(ONH) is a medical condition arising from the

underdevelopment of the optic nerve(s). This condition is the most
common congenital optic nerve anomaly. The optic disc appears
abnormally small, because not all the optic nerve axons have
developed properly.

Steps involved in the project

Step 1
collection of OCT images from hospital
Step 2
Developing software image processing and
evaluation using Mat lab detect ONH
damage.

The Proposed Algorithm:

Input image

Pre processing

Median filtering to eliminating

unwanted pixels

Texture segmentation using entropy

filter

Edge layer detection using std filter

and histogram operation

Normal image from OCT

Damaged image from OCT

Processing outputs

Conclusion
Glaucoma

is a second largest eye disease in the worldwide. Early

detection of glaucoma plays the major role in prevision of vision loss.
In this work, approach has been developed for identification of
glaucoma using RNFL segmentation using entropy method. The
boundary of the optic nerve head is obtained through MATLAB
program. Its higher for glaucoma optic nerve head because healthy
optic disk perimeter parameter more smoothen as compared to
glaucoma affected. This obeys the theory of entropy method. In the
future work, this method can be further enhanced for automated
detection by introducing robust and generalized optic nerve
segmentation algorithm.
