SECTION-III DIV.1 : Code Requirements


- Any suitable methods of heating and cooling,provided the
required heating and cooling rates,metal temperatures.metal
temperature uniformity,and temperature control are
maintained.

- All welds,including repir welds


- Time and temperature requirements as per table-NC-4622.1-1
- PWHT shall be performed in temperature-surveyed andcalibrated furnaces, or PWHT shall be performed with
thermocouples in contact with material or attached to blocks in
contact with the material.

*Any PWHT time which is anticipated to be applied to the material or item after it is completed
shall be specified in the Design Specification.The certificate Holder shall include this time in the
total time at temperature specified to be applied to the test specimens.

(a) The partial penetration welds are made with A-No.8 or non-air-hardening NICr-Fe weld metal after:
1.) The ferritic materials to be joined are buttered or built-up with A-No.8 or nonair-hardening NI-Cr-Fe weld metal having a min. thickness of 6mm;and
2.) The HAZ of the buttered or built-up ferritic materials are post weld heattreated in accordance with NC-4620 without the PWHT exemptions being
applied,prior to making the final welds

(b)The full penetration welds are made with A-No.1 or A-No.2 weld metal,provided that:
1.) The component or run pipe is built-up/buttered in the area of the attachment with A-No1 or A-No.2 metal
having a min. thickness of 6mm;

2.) The A-No1 or A-No.2 weld metal build up/buttering is post weld heat treated in accordance with NC-4620
for P-No.1 or P-No.3 materials without the PWHT exemption being applied;
3.) The welds do not penetrate through the component or run pipe thickness;
4.) Weld metal with A-No1 or A-No.2 analysis is used to join the nozzle or branch pipe of P-No.1 material to
the weld buildup or buttering;
5.) The nominal thickness of the weld joining the nozzle or branch pipe to the component or run pipe does not
exceed 38mm, and the maximum reported C content of the nozzle or branch pipeing connection does
not exceed 0.30%;
6.) a 95C min. preheat is maintained during welding whenever the nominal thickness of the weld exceeds:
(a).32mm and the max. reported C content of the material of the nozzle or branch pipe is 0.30% or less; or
(b)19mm and the max.reported C content of material of the nozzle or branch pipe connection exceeds 0.30%

-Limited weld repairs to vessels of P-No.3 materials and A-No.1,A-No.2.A-No.10 or A-No.11 weld filler metal
(SECION-IX,QW-442) may be made without PWHT or after the final PWHT, provided the following
requirements are met:
(a)

Examination of the area to be repaired : before repair area shall be examined by MT or DP in accordance
with NC-5110 and shall meet the NC-5340 or NC-5350 standards,

(b)

Max. extent of repair : a repair shall not exceed 6500mm2 in surface area and shall not be greater in depth
than 50% of the base metal or weld thickness or 13mm,whichever is less.

(c)

Repair welding procedure:

1.) Procedures and welders in accordance with Section-IX/SMAW & low hydrogen covered electrodes
2.) The largest electrode diameter shall be 4mm and bead width shall not exceed four times the electrode
diameter.
3.) Min. two layers of weld metal.The last layer shall be limited or ground off
4.) A preheat and interpass temperature of 150C min. shall be used
(d) Examination of repair welds : by MT methods and accepted in accordance with NC-4622.9 (a) above.

56C/Hr,after which the rate of cooling shall be sufficiently rapid to prevent
