Objective
The purpose of the proposed research is to

develop a program that analyze and optimally

design a flat slabs using visual basic
programming language there by to make the
analysis and design easy and economical
without affecting the strength and safety
requirements.

Introduction
A slab is important load bearing structural

element in building structures.

A very high percentage of the total volume of
concrete used for the construction of buildings
is used for the realization of slabs.
Consequently, as slabs have an important
impact on the total cost of the construction,
optimal design is necessary.

Problem statement
Slab takes the highest quantity of a given

building structure. And its analysis and design

is a day to day activity of structural engineers.
And it takes lot time to analyze and design a
slab manually than readymade program and it
leads to relatively high cost if the design is not
optimal.

Methodology

The analysis will be conducted using the strip method

or equivalent frame method.

And the analysis will be done for rectangular
arrangement of columns (rectangular shape)under
different types of loading namely distributed loads,
line loads and concentrated loads.
I am going to prepare a separate program that
changes the line and concentrated load to the
equivalent distributed load then this equivalent
distributed load will be inserted to the main code for
analysis.

Contd
The code will have the following as an input;
Dead load
Live load
Long and short dimensions of the slab
Concrete grade-compressive strength of
concrete(table 2)
Unit weight of concrete
Steel grade -yield strength of steel
Diameter of bar(6,8,10..22,24mm)
Unit price of concrete and bars.

Contd
The out puts of the code will be
End moments
Span moments
Maximum shears.
Depth of slab
Bar spacing.
Cost of slab per volume

Contd
Therefore by inserting different

combination of concrete grades and bar

diameters, we can determine the optimum
design and the corresponding cost..
