Know your teeth

A tooth has two parts

CROWN-The portion which is visible in
your mouth.

ROOT-Which is embedded in bone and

not visible.
Diagrammatically..
..
The Crown

• Crown is the portion which has three

layers namely Enamel, Dentin and
Pulp..
• Pulp is the vital tissue which has
blood and nerve supply.
• We feel pain only when the decay
reaches pulp.
….
Process of tooth decay

Glucose( from food particles) +

water( present in the mouth) +
Bacteria (millions of bacteria are present in all
peoples mouth).. This combination produce ACID
in the mouth.

This ACID take away the CALCIUM from the tooth

structure and forms small pits (holes) which
further unites and comes out as big CAVITY. This
goes on and on……
Initial decay in the enamel
Advanced decay causes pain,
sensitivity to cold food or water
• Deep cavity
damages the pulp
and causes severe
pain…
• It could be saved
by doing Root
Canal Treatment..
Root Canal Treatment

• Its a procedure to save the decayed

tooth if the patient reaches at proper
time..
• In this procedure damaged pulp is
removed by specialized instruments
and filled with filling materials.
• Duration-2-3 visits each of 30
minutes.
Gums
Gums are the soft pink tissue
which forms the collar of the
tooth crown ……..
Gum diseases…

• When the gums get inflammed ,it

becomes red and causes bleeding,
foul smell and mobility of tooth in
severe cases..
• Common term for the gum disease is
PYORRHOEA.
Causes of the gum diseases
• Tartar deposition around the tooth
due to improper brushing, high TDS(
total dissolved salts in the dwelling
area)
• Pregnancy ( due to hormonal
changes)
