CASE STUDY

[CO2 FLOODING]

SACROC four-pattern flood

Discovered in 1948
Location: Permian Basin in Scurry County, Texas
Thoroughly water flooded before miscible
injection
CO2 initiated in 1981 with inverted nine-spot
well pattern and 40-acre well spacing
Increase in oil production rate
9% increase in OOIP
Net CO2 use was 3.2Mscf/STB

Fig.1 production history, SACROC fourpattern flood

This shows an increase in recovery factor with C02
flooding.

NORTH WARD ESTES FIELD

Location: Ward and Winkler counties in
West Texas
Discovered in 1929 with seven major
reservoirs{fine grained sandstone}
Initiated water flooding in 1955 within a
3,840-acre area and RF of 25% of OOIP
Implemented CO2 flooding in 1989 with
20-acre 5-spot flooding pattern
MMP = 937psia

Comprehensive approach for designing this project

Laboratory work: PVT analysis, MMP

determination{slim tube
experiments}
History matching: improved
prediction of CO2 breakthrough
Simulation of C02 flood: 4component, black oil simulator used
for prediction of CO2 flood
performance
CO2 flood recovery = 8% of OOIP

MEANS SAN ANDRES UNIT

Location: eastern edge of the Central Basin
Platform of the Permian Basin
Discovered in 1934
Initiated water flooding in 1963 with a 20-acre
spacing
Flooding pattern was initially peripheral, then
3-to-1 line drive and finally inverted 9-spot
Project was evaluated and pilot test was done
MMP estimation was 1900psi

Recovery rate
Oil recovery from infill drilling = 5.3%
OOIP
Oil recovery from CO2 flooding =
7.1% OOIP
Recovery estimates have increased
due to effective reservoir
management program
Current incremental recovery from
CO2 flood is > 15% of OOIP

MISCIBLE NITROGEN INJECTION

[JAY FIELD]
Discovered in 1970
Location: Santa Rosa County, Florida
Initiated water flooding in 1973 to arrest
pressure decline
Started miscible N2 injection in 1981
Developed initially on 160-acre well
spacing but reduced to 140-acre spacing
due to infill drilling
WAG injection is used.

N2 Injection
Water flood was implemented with 3to-1 line-drive pattern and injection
rate 250,000bbl/d
Nitrogen injected at 86MMscf/d
This WAG process increased RF by
9% of OOIP
