ELECTRICITY

GENERATION FROM
STAIRCASES

WHY RENEWABLE
SOURCES OF ENERGY??

Zero pollution

Forever

No maintenance

WHY STAIRCASES??
A 150-lb person burns 91 calories for every 10
minutes of stair climbing.

Also, climbing staircases reduces the need for

escalators and elevators, thus reducing power usage.

Increases bowel-movement.
This project adds to the benefits as it generates power
from climbing staircases.

THE MECHANISM

Stepping and pushing on the stairs to push

ourselves up converts our mechanical energy in the
muscles into gravitational potential energy.

This gravitational potential energy is then

converted into kinetic energy of motion as the
person is pulled by gravity. This kinetic energy is
next converted into rotational energy and finally
into electrical energy.

WORKING
STAIR CASE STEP POWER GENERATOR
Converters basically new concept of non-conventional
energy generation. It is electro-mechanical energy
generating machine. This machine converts reciprocating
motion in to rotary motion. The rotational power is stored
in flywheel & flywheel rotates dynamo, which generates
electricity.
Here first important point is how we get reciprocating
motion, which is prime input in the system. For that we use
weight of stepping person on the stair case step that climbs
or get down the over the overhead bridges.

Contd...
We put our machine underneath the stair case
installing different units below every step foot
space. Each person stepping on the every foot step
will press the individual unit separately. All the
units are connected to the common shaft using chain
and sprocket drive. For stepping moment only the
energy is generated and for that instant sprocket
wheel will rotate the common shaft summing up the
rotating motion altogether.

COMPONENT USED
Square Iron pipes used to make the frame.
Dynamo used to generate electricity.
Helical spring used for deflection.
Rack and Pinion used to transmit the translatory
motion.
Gears and Flywheel are used to convert the kinetic
motion into rotational motion.
Freewheel is used to control the reverse motion of
the gears.

FRAMEWORK:Iron or wooden framework to

mound the main equipments
of project for proper
functioning.
Square Iron pipes are used to
make the frame and plywood
is being used to make the
stair.

FLYWHEEL
Flywheel is used to store and convert the
kinetic energy into rotational energy. The
Flywheel which we are using is of 8
inches in diameter and 8mm in thickness
of mild steel weighted approx 2.2 kg.

GEARS:The gears used in our project is of

mild steel and the shaft on which
the gears are mounted is of cast
iron. The Rack is of 19mm wide
and 8 inches long. It is a vertical
and has square cross section.

SETUP:The setup is used to convert the

translatory motion into rotational
motion by using rack and pinion,
sprocket and chain and a gear.
The pinion and the gear is
mounted on a common shaft and
the gear is connected to the
freewheel by the help of the chain
mechanism . The use of the
freewheel is that it controls the
reverse motion of the gear when
the springs are released.

EXPENDITURES
A step would cost $4 for the bicycle dynamo and $1 for
other items such as spring, manufacturing cost etcetera.

Between 2 floors of a building, there would be 12 floors

averagely.

Total cost per floor would estimate to $60

POWER OUTPUT
The $4 bicycle dynamo specified produces a power
output of 2 W when a cyclist drives at around 15 km/h
4 m/s.

Simple calculations show that the dynamo should

make one full revolution in one second.

For the previously specified 12 steps as an average, a

floor would produce 24 W when a person climbs it.

PLACES OF APPLICATION
RAILWAY

FUTURE ASPECTS
In future aspects we can use this principal in the speed
breakers at high ways where are rushes of the vehicles
too much thus increase input torque and ultimate output
of generator. If we are used this project at very busy
stairs palace then we produce efficient useful electrical
for large purposes.
This source of power can be used at the station building,
platform and waiting rooms. Also by accumulating this
low intensity electricity in Batteries, it can be supplied to
the commercial complexes or shopping complexes near
by the railway station or in big villages or in towns
where there is scarcity of electric supply.

SUMMARY
Electricity generation from staircases will not only
support tremendous generation of electricity, but also
contribute to the fitness of the individual.

It will also reduce the electricity consumption in the

form of escalators and elevators.

The cost per floor is just $60 and one can generate
enough electricity to compensate the initial costs
quickly.
