WHAT WE KNOW
ABOUT
TUBERCULOSIS
Tuberculosis
(TB)
is caused by
bacteria
(Mycobacterium

most often affect
the lungs.
Tuberculosis is

through the air.
When people with
lung TB cough,
sneeze or spit, they
propel the TB germs
into the air. A person
needs to inhale only
a few of these germs
to become infected.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT

TUBERCULOSIS
People infected with TB
bacteria have a 10%
lifetime risk of falling ill
with TB. However, persons
with compromised immune
systems, such as people
living with HIV, malnutrition
or diabetes, or people who
use tobacco, have a much
higher risk of falling ill.

WORLD TUBERCULOSIS
DAY 2016 - MARCH 24
Every year World
Tuberculosis Day is
observed on 24 March to
make people aware about
the hazardous disease.
Tuberculosis causes nearly
1.6 million deaths every
year around the planet. In
1882 Dr Robert Koch
thunderstruck the scientific
community by announcing
that he had discovered the
cause of tuberculosis, the

WORLD TB DAY, 24 MARCH

Tuberculosis (TB) is a top infectious disease killer
worldwide.
In 2014, 9.6 million people fell ill with TB and 1.5 million
died from the disease.
Over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income
countries, and it is among the top 5 causes of death for
women aged 15 to 44.
In 2014, an estimated 1 million children became ill with TB
and 140 000 children died of TB.
TB is a leading killer of HIV-positive people: in 2015, 1 in

WORLD TB DAY, 24 MARCH

The Millennium Development Goal target of halting and
reversing the TB epidemic by 2015 has been met globally.
TB incidence has fallen by an average of 1.5% per year since
2000 and is now 18% lower than the level of 2000.
The TB death rate dropped 47% between 1990 and 2015.
An estimated 43 million lives were saved through TB
diagnosis and treatment between 2000 and 2014.
Ending the TB epidemic by 2030 is among the health targets
of the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals.

18

GLOBAL IMPACT OF TB
TB occurs in every part of
the world. In 2014, the
largest number of new TB
cases occurred in the
South-East Asia and
Western Pacific Regions,
accounting for 58% of new
cases globally. However,
Africa carried the most
severe burden, with 281
cases per 100 000
population in 2014
(compared with a global

average of 133).

19

GLOBAL IMPACT OF TB
In 2014, about 80% of reported TB cases
occurred in 22 countries. The 6 countries
that stand out as having the largest number
of incident cases in 2014 were India,
Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peoples
Republic of China and South Africa. Some
countries are experiencing a major decline in
cases, while in others the numbers are
dropping very slowly. Brazil and China for
example, are among the 22 countries with a

GREATER RISK WITH HIV

INFECTION
When a person develops active TB disease,
the symptoms (cough, fever, night sweats,
weight loss etc.) may be mild for many
months. This can lead to delays in seeking
care, and results in transmission of the
bacteria to others. People with active TB can
infect 10-15 other people through close
contact over the course of a year. Without
proper treatment, 45% of HIV-negative
people with TB on average and nearly all

WHO RESPONSE
WHO PURSUES 6 CORE
FUNCTIONS IN ADDRESSING TB

21

1Provide global leadership on

matters critical to TB.
2.Develop evidence-based
policies, strategies and
standards for TB prevention,
care and control, and monitor
their implementation.
3.Provide technical support to
Member States, catalyze
change, and build sustainable
capacity.

THINGS WHICH CAN STOP THE

SPREAD OF TB
You can prevent TB
from spreading out by
covering your mouth
while coughing and
sneezing. Windows
should be kept open
and the flow of fresh air
should be allowed. And
the treatment should
also be carried out till
the end and medication
should be continued

WHY WE CONTINUE TO
CELEBRATE WORLD TB DAY
World TB Day celebration provides a big opportunity
to all the people to get aware about the causes and
precautions of TB. It mobilizes the political and social
authorities for further progress towards the disease
prevention for the effective reduction in the TB cases
and death rate in the coming years. Since 1990, the
mortality rate of TB has decreased by 40% all over the
world. Invention of various new TB tools has occurred
for rapid diagnostic tests of TB. All this have become
possible only because of this awareness campaig n.
