DURABILITY CHARACTERISTICS OF SELF

COMPACTING CONCRETE WITH FLY ASH

INTRODUCTION

The study of workability and durability characteristics of

Self- Compacting Concrete (SCC) with Viscosity Modifying
Admixture (VMA), and containing Class F fly ash. The mix design for
SCC was arrived as per the Guidelines of European Federation of
National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC). In this
investigation, SCC was made by usual ingredients such as cement, fine
aggregate, coarse aggregate, water and mineral admixture fly ash at
various replacement levels (10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%).

Cont..
The super plasticizer used was Glenium B233 and
the viscosity modifying agent used was Glenium Stream 2.
The experiments are carried out by adopting a water-powder
ratio of 0.45. Workability of the fresh concrete is determined
by using tests such as: slump flow, T50, V-funnel, L-Box and
U-box tests. The durability of concrete is tested by acid
resistance, sulphate attack and saturated water absorption at
the age of 28, 56 and 90 days.

IN MINI PROJECT..
In this mini project we are going to study about the
properties of self compacting concrete with fly ash and the design
mix for M40.

HOW DOES IT WORKS?

A SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE MUST:
Have a fluidity that allows self consolidation without external energy.
Remains homogeneous in a form during and after the placing process and
Flow easily through reinforcement
TO ACHIEVE THESE PERFORMANCES
Reduction of the size of aggregate content in order to reduce the friction, or the
frequency of collisions between them increasing the overall concrete fluidity.
Increasing the paste content to further increase fluidity.

MATERIALS FOR CONCRETE

CEMENT:
The most common cement currently used in construction is ordinary
Portland cement of 43 grade. This type of cement is typically used in construction and is
readily available from a variety of sources.
AGGREGATES:

Aggregates chosen for SCC is typically round in shape, is well graded and smaller
in maximum size than that used for conventional concrete typical conventional
concrete could have a maximum aggregate size of 20 mm or more. Typically,
maximum size of coarse aggregate used in SCC ranges from 10 mm to 20 mm.
.

Cont..
CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES:
Super plasticizers are an essential component of SCC to provide necessary
workability .the new generation super plasticizers termed poly carboxylate
ethers (PCE) is particularly useful for SCC.
SUPER PLASTICIZERS:
Super plasticizers (high range water reducers) are low molecular water soluble
polymers designed to achieve high amounts of water reduction in concrete
mixture in order to attain a desired slump. these admixtures are used frequently
to produce high-strength concrete, since workable mixes with water-cement
ratios well below 0.40 are possible. they also can be used with water reduction
to produce concretes with very high slumps, in the range of 150 to 250 mm.

PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE
WORKABILITY:
The concrete mix proportions chosen should be
such that the concrete is of adequate workability for the placing
conditions of the concrete and can properly be compacted with the
means available. The workability of concrete depends on
water/cement ratio. To enable the concrete to be fully compacted with
given efforts, normally a higher water/cement ratio than that
calculated by theoretical considerations may be required.

Cont..
SEGREGATION:

Due to the high fluidity of SCC, the risk of segregation and blocking is very
high. Preventing segregation is therefore an important feature of the control regime.
The tendency to segregation can be reduced by the use of a sufficient amount
of fines (<0.125mm), or using a Viscosity modifying agents.
BLEEDING:

Bleeding is sometimes referred as water gain. It is a particular form of

segregation, in which some of the water from the concrete out to the surface of the
concrete, being of the lowest specific gravity among all the ingredients of the
concrete.

REQUIREMENTS OF SELF
COMPACTING CONCRETE
The main characteristics of SCC are the properties in the fresh state. the mix design is
focused on the ability to flow under its own weight without vibration. The ability to flow
through heavily congested reinforcement under its own weight, and the ability to retain
homogeneity without segregation. The workability of SCC of higher than very high
degree of workability mentioned in IS 456:2000:
Filling ability.
Passing ability.
Segregation resistance.
It is most important to note that:
A concrete mix can only be classified as Self-Consolidating Concrete if the requirements
for all three characteristics are fulfilled.
