Safety

It looks good, stylish and modern. It looks

attractive to me because I like to colour and
shape, I would buy it.

Easy to use due to only having 2 small

simple buttons.

Very safe because it has no small parts so no

chocking hazards. It says the people under the
age of 3 should not use it.

To improve: Make the product larger and add

a wider range of colours.

To improve: Add on/off buttons and make the product

smaller so its easier to transport and use. Make the
buttons bigger so that people with larger hands can
operate the product easier.

To improve: Do not have detachable wires to

reduce choking hazard.

bigger than needed.

To improve: Make the product more durable by

using wood or metals.

To improve: Remove un-needed

materials.

ABS plastics for the main frame and case and

aluminium for the buttons and the internal
components.
Injection molding would be used to create the
main body of the product, the ABS. This would
be done by melting plastic beads and injecting
the liquid plastic into a mold.
To improve: Use wood as it is a sustainable
material and therefore environmentally friendly.

Justification (Reason why)

Proposed
solution/Function

Play a high quality music from both iPhone and Android

inputs.

No all people have iPhone so I am making the product able

to play from both iPhone and Android, this will widen the
target user and usability.

User/client/customer

My product user is teenagers aged 12-17, mainly male.

My target user in mainly male because the colors I use are

stereotypically male colors such as green and blue. The
age is 12-18 because the shapes used are bold and
attractive to younger users.

Materials

The main material used in my product is MDF (medium

density fiberboard), other materials I will use are acrylic. I
will use aluminum cut out with center lathe for the feet.

I will use MDF because it gives a smooth spray painted

finish with no grain. I will use acrylic for speaker grills
because it can be cut out on the laser cutter and it looks
good. I will use aluminum for the feet as they can be cut out
on the center lathe and they look good. I will use vinyl
stickers for logos.

Finish/Colours

I will use a matte black spray-paint with matte green

highlights.

The bright green color fits the target user needs by being
bright and bold.

Methods of manufacture
&CAD/CAM

I will use CAD (computer aided design) to design my

product and CAM (computer aided manufacture) to make
my product.

I will use CAD CAM to create my product because I can cut

out my product more precisely and without human
mistakes. I will use the center lathe to cut out my aluminum
feet.

Environment/ Social/
cultural

My product should be environmentally friendly and not

offend people such as racist or explicit language or
logos.

I will make sure that my product is made from MDF which is

a wood making it a sustainable material. Also I will make
sure that there are on offensive or racist logos, colour or
writing on my product.

Costs

My product should cost around 30.

This price has been calculated according to the price of the

raw materials. 5 for materials such as MDF and acrylic,
15 for spray paint and 10 for electronics.

Health and safety

My product should be safe and have no hazards

associated with the product.

I will make sure that my product has no sharp edges and all
sides will be smooth. I will make sure that there are no
exposed wires on my product.

Time

I should be finished by Christmas 2015.

This is the deadline.

RM Model

Paper Model
From this model I have found out
that the product is too thin and
hardly stands up and that there
isnt a place for the phone to be
placed. To fix this I added some
depth to the make the product
more stable. I also added a step
for my phone to sit when music is
playing.

From this model I have found out

that the shape of my product wont
work. The base of my product isnt
big enough to support the reset of
the product, the product falls over.
To correct this, I have changed the
design so that the base is larger
so that it will stand. I also added
aluminium feet to add stability.

Evaluation

Are you happy with how products turned out? Why?

I am happy with the way my product has turned out because it looks exactly how I imagined and was relatively easy to create. The finish is
smooth and of the desired colour. I am pleased with the joints used (to add strength) and the aluminium feet (for stability). The sound system in
my product works well without any crackling or buzzing. I like the acrylic speaker covers and the acrylic logos on my product. They add colour
and vibrancy to my product.
Have you modified your products from your original designs, if so how and why?
Yes, I have made the depth of my product larger so that my product is more stable. I have changed my product from the original design by
removing a area so that my iPhone can safely be attached to my product.
What problems did you encounter and how did you solve them?
First problem that I encountered was that my product wasnt big enough to stand up so increased the depth of the base of my product and I
also added aluminum feet to add to the stability increased.
Secondly, my product wasnt able to hold a devise such as a mobile phone. To resolve this problem, I altered the design so that a area was
removed for a phone to fit.
Finally, the aluminium feet that I had made where unbalanced as one was larger that the other 3. To fix this problem I once again put the
aluminium foot in the centre lathes chuck, powered the lathe and removed 3mm of aluminium.
How could you improve your products if you made them again?
If I was to remake my product, I would make the product a little smaller because in my opinion, my product is a little over sized. I would also add
more LED lights on the front of my product, this would add more colour and brightness to my product.
How does your product impact on the environment?
To reduce the impact on the environment of my product, I have made sure that the main body of my product is made out on MDF so that the
materials are sustainable.

Finish/Colours

I will use a matte black spray-paint with matte green highlights. - My product meets the product specification because
I have used black matte spray paint to spray my product. I have not used green paint to highlight but I will substitute
the spray paint with acrylic logos and shapes.

Methods of
manufacture
&CAD/CAM

I will use CAD (computer aided design) to design my product and CAM (computer aided manufacture) to make my
product. I have used both CAM (computer aided manufacture) and CAD (computer aided design) in the creation of
my product. I used 2D Design and SkechUp to design my product on the computer. I then imported my 2D Design into
the Laser Cutter (CAM) program and used the Laser Cutter to cut out my product. This gave me a perfect fit and the
intended dimensions.

Environment/
Social/ cultural

My product should be environmentally friendly and not offend people such as racist or explicit language or logos. My

Product Testing
Test 1: Is the sound quality good/do the speakers work?

Target User Testing

Test 1: Do you think the design of the product is attractive?

The sound quality of my product is good. There is no crackling or

buzzing in the speakers and both work. I tested this by powering my
speaker and playing music on my phone.
Test 2: Does my docking station support/is it compatible with my
phone?
My docking station is combatable with both iPhone and Android
phone due to the AUX cord being a universal connection. I tested
this by plugging in my AUX cord and playing music. Music played.

Test 3: Does the door open and close easily?

The door opens and closes easily with some friction on the bottom of
the door. This is because the door is a little too big at the bottom. I
would have filled the MDF down so that it wouldnt stick.

Test 2: What do you think of the shape and structure of my product?

Test 4: Are there any scratched or imperfections on my product?

My products finish is smooth and has no scratches. I tested this by
inspecting the product with both my eyes and hands. However, there
was some small dents before I painted, I fixed this by using filler and
glass paper.
Test 5: Does the switch/volume control work well?
Both the power switch and the volume control work well. I tested this
by powering the speaker and playing music while adjusting the
volume control. The sound quality stayed clear and the volume was
adjusted accordingly.
