Introduction
• Why are you having a cardiac
catheterization? Chest pain, shortness of
breath, known coronary artery disease,
heart attack, abnormal stress test, heart
valve problems, surgical clearance
• You are not alone!
• In 2006, an estimated 1,115,000
diagnostic cardiac catheterizations were
performed on patients (American Heart
Association, 2009).
• Estimated that 80,000,000 Americans, one
in three, have some form of heart disease
(American Heart Association, 2009).
Objectives for teaching:
• Introduce and identify basic heart
anatomy.
• Identify pre-procedure patient prep.
• Show a cardiac catheterization and stent
procedure.
• Review commonly used medications for
cardiac patients.
• Explore some life-style modifications post
heart catheterization.
